The preliminary budget may be set, but the City Council's final budget decisions are far from over. So get your voice heard. What services are most important to you and what are you willing to do without? There are tough discussions over the next couple of weeks so tell the City Council and Mayor your thoughts and ideas. Email them at citycouncilmayor@ci.red-wing.mn.us, and also attend the next budget workshops today at 5 p.m. and on Thursday, October 26, at 5:30. Your input matters to Red Wing's future.

Amos Owen Award Winner – Jasmine Fiddler
Jasmine Fiddler embodies the spirit of Mitakuye Owasin: We Are All Related. That phrase has been central to the Honoring Dakota Project, just as Jasmine has been vital to the project in building relationships between the Prairie Island Indian Community and Red Wing. On Tuesday evening, the Mayor, on behalf of the Human Rights Commission, awarded the 2023 Amos Owen Award to Jasmine for her role in the Honoring Dakota Project and for working so the rights of Indigenous community members are upheld. Jasmine's contributions to our community were invaluable this year, and we at the City are proud to be able to recognize her. To watch Jasmine's award ceremony in the City Hall Council Chambers, click here (item 7.A.). To meet Jasmine and view her artistic beading work, stop down at the Red Wing Arts Fall Festival this weekend.

The Future of Short-Term Rentals
Airbnbs, VRBOs, and other short-term rentals are a hot topic, and as Red Wing's moratorium on short-term rentals comes to an end soon, there is new direction on the future of these units in our community. On Tuesday night, City Council voted to introduce two new ordinances relating to short-term rentals in Red Wing. The ordinances must be approved again on a second reading at the next City Council meeting before they would go into effect. If they are fully approved, though, changes to the zoning code will include restricting non-owner-occupied short-term rentals so that no more than two units could be located within 400 feet of another unit (unless they are in a multi-unit building) and capping the number of non-owner-occupied units to 50 across the city. Watch the discussion at the City Council meeting (item 11.D.) or read the accompanying staff report to learn more.

More than 230 people attended the Mural Wopida Event on Chief Red Wing Day last Monday, October 9. Folks gathered around the mural at the corner of West Third and Potter streets to view the mural, listen to the drum circle, give gifts, and celebrate a new beginning in the relationship between the Prairie Island and Red Wing communities. Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan spoke, along with Tribal Council Vice President Shelley Buck, Mayor Mike Wilson, City Council member Becky Norton, mural artists Jeremy Fields and Collins Provost Fields, and Prairie Island members Austin Owen, Cole Redhorse Taylor, and Nicky Buck, among others. A video on the project will be coming soon here on City Beat. Learn more about the event and the multi-year project on the Honoring Dakota website.

In addition to hunting and spending time with his friends and family, cooking is one of the things that Firefighter/Paramedic Ross Stachowitz enjoys doing most in his spare time. Through his career in the fire service – the last six years of which he’s spent as a full-time member of the Red Wing Fire Department – he also knows that cooking is a leading cause of fires. That’s why this Fire Prevention Week Ross echoes the theme of “Cooking safety starts with YOU” and encourages everyone to be very mindful when they’re cooking. Beyond the kitchen, Ross’s other top fire safety tip is to always close bedroom doors before going to sleep. An ounce of prevention goes a long way, but whenever there’s smoke, we’ll always be grateful to have a Fire Department full of dedicated people like Ross to answer the call.
