Sales tax: January collection up 16 percent |
|
January sales tax collections are up nearly 16 percent — or $262,000 over the same period last year, Chief Financial Officer/City Clerk Jason Muninger said Monday.
The increase continues an upward trend for returns over the past year, and in particular the last seven months.
"We've actually had above-average returns going back about a year," Muninger said. "We have consistently had $1.8 million collections every month, with one $1.9 million month, for the past six months."
Muninger said the January report is the first of two that represent holiday sales.
"The January and February reports reflect holiday sales, which are typically our two largest months," he said. "The 16 percent increase is a very good indication for the season. Shopping locally really does make a difference, so we have citizens and visitors to our city to thank for these solid returns."
The increases, which are being experienced throughout the state, are likely due to a combination of more local spending and an influx of government and tribal stimulus funding into the local economy.

Clean-up coupon permits free trip to landfill
City utility customers should expect coupon next billing cycle

Bartlesville residents will receive a coupon for one free trip to Osage Landfill in their next utility bill, Public Works Director Keith Henry said recently.
“Residents should expect to receive their coupon with their next utility bill. The coupon will allow them to dispose of unwanted household goods free of charge anytime between the date of receipt until Dec. 31, 2022,” Henry said.
The coupon will be included in the next round of utility bills, which will begin showing up in mailboxes in mid to late January. However, the City issues utility bills in four cycles, so most customers will not receive their coupon until February. Any Solid Waste customer who has not received their coupon by March 1 should contact the Utility Billing office at 918.338.4224.
The coupon is valid for City of Bartlesville Residential Solid Waste customers only. No commercial accounts or contractors will be permitted. One coupon is issued per customer and may not be duplicated.
The clean-up program is intended to help Bartlesville residents dispose of items typically too large or cumbersome for their weekly trash pick-up, Henry said.
“The program gives people an opportunity to dispose of things like furniture, appliances (under certain conditions) and other items they can’t put in their regular trash,” he said. “It is important to note that things like complete structures, including roofs, trees and vehicles are NOT permitted.”
Other items not permitted include tires, batteries, hazardous material, wet paint, appliances that have not had the compressors removed, such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners, and demolished structures. Appliances must be certified “Freon free” if the compressor is not removed.
“All appliances that have compressors must have the compressors removed before disposal,” Henry said. “The compressor can be disposed of if it is removed. We recommend that everyone contact a licensed refrigerant technician for the removal.”
Residents may take their items to Osage Landfill during regular business hours, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Martin Luther King Day closures, trash schedule
City of Bartlesville offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 17, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Monday trash routes will be serviced on Wednesday, Jan. 19, due to the holiday. Monday customers will need to put their trash out no later than 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19, for their trash to be collected.
The City Recycle Center, located at 10th Street and Virginia Avenue, will also be closed. The center will reopen as normally scheduled on Wednesday, Jan. 19.
Police and fire services will continue as normally scheduled, with no interruptions.
City offices will re-open as normally scheduled on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Citizens Police Academy starts next month
Limited class size; applications accepted through January 31

Bartlesville Police Department is accepting applications through Jan. 31 for the next BPD Citizens Police Academy, a 12-week comprehensive course that allows citizens to become familiar with the operations of law enforcement through classroom and hands-on instruction in all aspects of the police department.
"Anyone who is interested in attending this academy should sign up as soon as possible," said Police Chief Tracy Roles. "We are limiting the class to 20 people, and it will fill up fast."
Goals of the program include:
- To encourage attendance at and help provide funds for the “Bartlesville Citizen’s Police Academy.”
- To enhance the relationship between our community and our Police Department.
- To provide community support to the department.
- To develop a trust between our citizens and our police.
The next academy will start on Feb. 17. Classes are held 6-9 p.m. every Thursday.
Applicants must be at least 18 and live or work in the Bartlesville/Dewey area. Applicants must pass a background check to the satisfaction of police department administration.
"The Bartlesville Police Department is committed to reaching out and developing working partnerships with citizens, businesses and community organizations," Roles said. "The Citizens Police Academy is a method of educating the public on what police officers do and why they do it. It also helps to break down barriers to communication and develops trust between citizens and the police."

BAHM 'Third Thursday' series continues with special lecture
The Bartlesville Area History Museum continues its Third Thursday series with an event planned for Jan. 20, when visitors to the museum can hear a special lecture on the Bartlesville's Interurban Railway from Rudy Geissler. While parents are listening to the lecture, kids can enjoy a fun trolley themed coloring station.
Light refreshments will be served. The lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m., but the museum will be open from 6-8 p.m. to allow the public to enjoy the main gallery and the special exhibit "End of the Line: The Short History of Bartlesville’s Interurban Railway."
Museum entry is free, but donations are accepted. For more information, contact the museum at 918.338.4290 or history@cityofbartlesville.org. The museum is open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located on the fifth floor of City Hall, 401 S. Johnstone Ave.

Christmas trees accepted at Sooner Park; mulch available
The City is offering free Christmas tree mulching again this season at the upper level parking lot of Sooner Park. Undecorated trees may be dropped off at the designated fenced area, just east of Madison Boulevard. Trees will be accepted through Jan. 24. The mulch will be available to the public at no cost at the drop site Monday through Friday as quantities allow. For more information, call 918.338.4131.
