New Building Codes ensure your safety
New laws expected to take effect January 1, 2017
On January 1, 2017, the new 2016 Building codes will be implemented. Every three years, the State of California Building Standards Commission adopts new building and fire codes as the governing standards to regulate construction projects.  These triannual updates are done in order to implement any improved life safety standards as new scientific and technical evidence is developed.

These new codes are made available in July so each local jurisdiction can have an opportunity to amend the codes base on their unique geographical, climate, and topographical conditions. The City of San Gabriel, along with the cities in the Los Angeles Basin, established a committee to carefully examine the new code and made a number of structural amendments due to our proximity to the seismic faults.

"For the most part, these amendments are essential in order to help maintain the structural integrity of low rise projects in our seismic zone as many of the minor residential additions and alterations are designed prescriptively without benefiting from the expertise of a registered professional," explained Joe Chen, Building Official. The list of amendments and the rationales behind them can be found on the California Building Standards Commission's website at

Additional information on how the new code will impact future and current permit applications can also be found on the City's Building Division's webpage . For questions, please contact Building Official Joe Chen at or at 626.308.2806, ext. 4627.
