Celebrating the Women of Providence

March was Women's History Month, and the Council kicked things off with a celebration on March 8, International Women's Day. The evening featured vendors from around the city, a panel discussion, performances, and an award ceremony.

Battling the Housing Crisis

This month, the Council addressed the housing crisis by establishing the Housing Crisis Task Force. On March 22, the group convened for the first time, electing Deputy Majority Leader Mary Kay Harris as Chair and Councilman Pedro Espinal as co-chair. Councilors Graves, Peterson, and Roias are also members.

On March 16, Council President Rachel Miller participated in a conversation on the future of the Cranston Street Armory Warming Shelter. Leaders from around the state addressed the community including Housing Secretary Stefan Pryor.

On March 27, during a special Council meeting, RI Homeless presented the latest data on the state of homelessness.

Engaging the Community

Community meetings are a cornerstone of the City Council. In March, Councilors hosted a total of 6 community meetings across Providence.

Major issues of interest included education and plans for renovations to public schools, a new community electric program coming in May, and upcoming construction at local parks and playgrounds.
