City Council and Mayor Partner with Community Groups to Hold Drive-Thru Voter Registration and Census Event in Champions Square
NEW ORLEANS - Councilmember Helena Moreno is proud to announce a first-of-its-kind drive-thru voter registration and census "get counted" event in Champions Square on Saturday, September 26, from 9 AM to NOON. The event, which will also provide a mask giveaway, is an opportunity to register to vote, update your registration, request an absentee ballot and sign up be a poll worker. Separately, Census workers will be helping participants fill out their census forms as well.

"Due to COVID-19, planning voter engagement events has been challenging. Traditional rallies or other events drawing crowds are not safe. I'm so thankful to Power the Polls and Lebron James' More Than A Vote, two national organizations who helped us think outside the box and encouraged us to get this event underway. To build a healthy democracy, we need participation - not just from a few, but from all. It's time to get prepared and motivated to get out there and vote," said Councilmember Moreno.

Michael Tyler, EVP for Public Affairs of More Than A Vote said, "Using Champions Square for voter registration, absentee ballot requests, poll worker recruitment, and census activities is a perfect example of a collaborative effort that provides a core civic function for communities that are suffering the most during this pandemic. Leveraging the sports venues and their surrounding facilities for voter engagement will ensure that the people of New Orleans can get counted, get registered, and make sure their voices are heard in a safe and convenient way."

This event is possible due to volunteers and help from several groups including: Louisiana State and Exposition District, Office of Orleans Parish Registrar of Voters, Law Offices of Chip Forstall, National Council of Jewish Women, Alpha Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, United Way of Southeast Louisiana, Pontchartrain (LA) Chapter of The LinksIncorporated, Crescent City Chapter of the Links, Inc, and the Power Coalition.

"We at the Louisiana Stadium Exposition District are excited to partner with Mayor Cantrell, Councilmember Helena Moreno and the Council along with numerous other stakeholders to utilize these state facilities for the public good," said LSED member and former Senator JP Morrell. "The Superdome, the Arena and Champions Square are all public assets and this is a great opportunity to use them for the benefit of the citizens who helped build them."

Councilmember Moreno has also announced the launch of a simple voting information website, NolaVote.com, to help support the efforts of many local organizations, including the Power Coalition, United Way of Southeast Louisiana, the National Council of Jewish Women, and more.
