News and Information from the City of Mountain View

United Against Hate Week Nov. 13 – 19

The City of Mountain View has been spreading the message that we're United Against Hate through activities and events this week.

In recognition, City librarians have created displays for children, teens and adults with books featuring diversity, equity and activism. The displays also have free posters that are available to the public.

The Library will also be hosting a United Against Hate Film Screening and Discussion: I Am Not Your Negro on Saturday, Nov. 19. The film will be the Academy Award-nominated documentary I Am Not Your Negro, which The New York Times describes as a "thrilling introduction" to James Baldwin's work, followed by an optional discussion after the screening.

Meanwhile, City recreation staff from the Teen Center have been at Crittenden and Graham middle schools with lunchtime displays and activities including:

  • United Against Hate Collage
  • DIY Anti-Hate Buttons
  • Cookies for Acts of Kindness
  • Dissolving Hate Crafts
  • Mix It Up and Sit with a New Friend Day

2023 Mountain View Minimum Wage Rate

What's Next for the Housing Element Update

The Housing Element is the City's long-term housing policy meant to guide future decisions on housing in Mountain View. Mountain View, like all cities in California, is required by the State to prepare a Housing Element to plan for an allocated number of housing units.

Since receiving the State’s Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) formal comment letter on the City’s Housing Element at the end of September, the City has actively worked with HCD and met with community groups to revise the Draft 2023—2031 Housing Element. The revised Draft Housing Element is available on the project website: MVHousingElement.org.

Next Steps:

  • Second Draft Housing Element submitted to HCD – Friday, Nov. 18
  • HCD Review (60 days): Friday, Nov. 18 through Tuesday, Jan. 17

Scheduled Meetings:

  • Wednesday, Nov. 16 Environmental Planning Commission (EPC) Study Session – Housing Element
  • Wednesday, Dec. 7 EPC Public Hearing – Rezonings and Environmental Impact Report (EIR) Certification
  • Tuesday, Dec. 13 City Council Study Session – Housing Element
  • Tuesday, Jan. 24 City Council Public Hearing – Rezonings and EIR Certification

Tentative Meetings:

  • EPC and City Council Public Hearings on the Housing Element Adoption is expected by the first quarter of 2023, depending on City Council direction and the timing and extent of HCD’s comments.

Any revisions will be discussed with HCD during their review period to ensure that the final draft is compliant with State law per HCD.

There's Still Time to Name That Park!

The City of Mountain View is seeking suggestions for naming a new park to be constructed at 1720 Villa St. Got some ideas? Email your suggestions with the title “Villa St. Park Name” by Friday, Dec. 2 to [email protected]. City staff will present suggested names to the Parks and Recreation Commission at their meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. and make a recommendation.

The following criteria are used in determining park names to be submitted to the City Council for consideration:

  • A City park may be named for the street it is adjacent to or the school on which it is located.
  • City parks may be named for a historical figure or local landmark. The historical figure must be deceased for a minimum of five years.
  • Other park names will be considered only if the naming criteria above do not provide a name suitable for a park or recreation facility.

For more information on the Naming of City Parks and other City Facilities, view City Council Policy K17.
