St. Tammany Health System COVID UPDATE FOR NEIGHBORS 03/29/2021
We have eight patients in our hospital in COVID-19 care today, trending upward from a low of two about two weeks ago. We are nonetheless encouraged and optimistic given the single digit census among an inpatient census of 163. We have discharged 1,092 patients from COVID care since the pandemic began.
Vaccinations are believed to be one of the primary impacts to containing the spread of COVID-19 in our community, along with continued masking, distancing and handwashing. We have issued 18,827 vaccines since our first dose in December, and we continue to receive regular supply from the state.
The Louisiana Department of Health is hosting a vaccine event with Louisiana National Guard at the fairgrounds in Covington, March 30, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and our partner Ochsner Health is hosting a mobile vaccine event at Pelican Park in Mandeville with the one-shot J&J vaccine, March 31. See StTammany.health for details on how to get an appointment for either of these different events.
Additionally, St. Tammany Health System continues to schedule COVID-19 vaccination appointments through MyChart or 985-898-4001 for any Louisiana resident 16 and over. Convenient locations include the main hospital, Express Care in front of Flower Estates and the Cordes Pavilion on Bootlegger Rd. The call center is answered 24 hours per day, so calling at off-peak times may result in faster connection.

A few months ago several of our residents bought and moved into new, safe and affordable homes. To keep the monthly costs lower than their former rent, finished yards were not included in the West 30's Redemption houses. I shared this in an e-blast.
Despite weather delays, their retreat and the Junior/Senior Prom the night before, Seniors from St. Paul's School took it upon themselves to clear the yards of debris and begin maintaining the yards.
Simply put, they are being
"Good for Nothing*."

Community Helper in Need
of Community Help (UPDATE)
|
|
A few years ago Pamala McKay began preparing meals for those in our area in need - poor, homebound, homeless, disabled and/or seniors. She started on a 4 burner electric cooktop with food donated by stores and restaurants.
One morning a break-out group from Leadership St. Tammany assisted her with meal prep. With Pastor Jay Graves help, Pamala was moved into the kitchen facilities of Hosanna Lutheran Church. Today, with a little help from some friends, she cooks and delivers over 200 meals every Wednesday to Slidell, Abita Springs, Mandeville, Covington and Tangi … quite a chore, quite a feat.

Ways the Community to Helped
|
|
The most immediate need is someone with basic internet skills to setup "Sign-Up" Genius, then check with Pamala on a weekly basis posting what help is needed. Sidenote: The great thing about this is a person working from home could make a huge difference and never leave the house. Reply to this e-mail if interested. Several folks volunteered for this task. Much appreciation to Charlotte Guinot who took the lead and to Rebekkah Stansbury of the Southern Hotel for the assist. Click the link to check out "Sign Up Genius":
Volunteers are welcome on Wednesdays from 9:00am to 1:00pm at Hosanna Lutheran Church in Mandeville - food prep, cooking, packaging, cleaning, labeling. There is also a need for volunteers to deliver the meals.
All are invited to Covington's Community Garden (corner Jackson and 30th Avenue) on Friday mornings (9:00am start) to "get your hands dirty." Food raised from the garden will go to this ministry.
High Priority: Refrigeration storage for donated items. Pamala's prayer is a kitchen location where perishables can be both stored and prepared. This is a toughie.
Pamala can be reached at 985-237-3138 or on Facebook Messenger Pamala Onmygrind McKay. Or you can reply to me via this e-mail.

The "Covington Community Garden Kids Club" recently got a lesson in farming and healthy eating.

At this time the biggest need at the garden are the black tubs in which the plants grow. Amazingly (to me) a large pot costs $50.00. Donation of containers or $$ to buy containers would be a huge help. (Update below)

"With a little help
from my friends"
In addition to cash donations,
Yum Yum Gimme Sum's Betty Brock secured a donation of all the planting tubs needed.
Big Thanks to Tim Ellzey for spearheading the design and construction : )
Join us each Friday, 9:00am for some old-fashioned community gardening. It's good for your bones and it's good for your soul.
