Bainbridge Islanders,
This winter, there will come a day when the weather is at its worst. Snow and ice will cover the roads, and while most of us are at home, warm and comfortable, the city’s public works crews will be out in force. Behind the wheels of snowplows and anti-icing vehicles, this dedicated crew will brave the elements to keep our roads clear. It’s not a glamorous job, but it’s one we all depend on, and you may be surprised at the level of skill it requires.
To practice and improve their skills, the Public Works Department holds an annual pre-snow “Roadeo.” Approximately 20 maintenance personnel participate in a competition that tests operators' skills. The operators practice maneuvering around parked cars, backing up, navigating inside and outside curves, and working the plow blade. There is also a written test. Maintenance Technician III Mike Bidlencik won again this year; he has placed first four out of the last five years. He will receive a trophy to take home, his name on the perpetual trophy, and a hat. In fact, the top three scores earn a hat with the title “Roadeo Boss.”
Early in my municipal career, I worked in Public Works. I know firsthand “call-outs” at night are not enjoyable but part of the job. I hope that when the weather turns foul, and you see public works crews out on the roads, you’ll do two things: drive carefully and take a moment to appreciate the hard work these men and women are doing for all of us.
Speaking of cold weather, I’m taking a vacation for a few weeks. I’ll be back before Thanksgiving.
Best,
Blair King
City Manager
