Summer/Fall 2023

"Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.” ~ James 5:7-8 ESV

Similar to the farmer waiting patiently for the crop harvest and the autumn rain, TCM is proud to celebrate the harvest of this past summer, and the incoming fall season. As our staff continue to serve, patiently wait, and build steady and deeper relationships with the children, youth and families in our ministry communities, the harvest is plentiful. The Interns, Outreach Workers and Mission Teams from Flemingdon Park, Jesse-Ketchum and Kingston-Galloway have their own experiences of how God is working and showing the fruit of their labour. This verse also serves as a thoughtful reminder that we should not focus on living for this life or on things of this world, but instead in anticipation of Jesus coming again. We hope to continue planting the seeds of true hope that comes from knowing God, in the lives of each family we encounter. Thank you for being part of this journey in God’s good work!

2023 SONSHINE DAY CAMPS

In each of our three communities, we are so grateful to God for providing the summer teams that made Sonshine Day Camp for children and youth impacted by poverty possible. During the seven weeks of free day camps, our teams provided consistent love, care, kindness and patience in building relationships and memories, and in reaping the harvest for the Kingdom of God.

At Flemingdon Park, a child returned with a warm smile, excitement and fun stories to share with us. A mother appreciated the loving relationship our staff built with her child and all the fun they experienced together this past summer. Praise God! At Jesse-Ketchum, God continues to work in the lives of campers like Sabrina. Although she has yet to know Jesus as her personal Saviour, she learned that "We worship God because He comforts us whenever we're sad.” At the same time, the Kingston-Galloway team was encouraged by the younger children as they showed genuine curiosity and engaged during Bible time.

Thank you sincerely for supporting Sonshine Day Camp through prayer, volunteering, and donations. Check out how our summer went by watching Sonshine Day Camps highlights!

FAREWELL: God is Continuing Your Story

At summer’s end, we said goodbye to three of our amazing sisters.

Natalie and Tamara, our two Liebenzel missionaries from Germany.

Natalie and Tamara, our two Liebenzel missionaries from Germany. We are thankful for our time serving with them and seeing how each child loved engaging with them during programs. Their curiosity and love for Christ expanded, which helped them better understand what it meant to grow in God’s grace. While serving in the community, they learned to be vulnerable before God, to truly surrender their own desires to Him, and to trust in His sovereignty.

Natalie and Tamara share more details of their year-long experience at TCM in their blogs. Click the buttons below to read more!

"Yesterday and Today and Forever" by Tamara

Nuri Lee was our Outreach Worker in Flemingdon Park for the past 4 years.

We’ve been blessed to have Nuri as she brought so much joy and laughter to our team. She demonstrated God’s character to the children, youths and families in her ministry community and deepened loving relationships with each one of them. In her blog, Nuri shares how her ministry at Toronto City Mission has become a grand testimony in her life. She witnessed God’s faithfulness that shined the brightest even in the midst of challenging moments.

"Through God's Transformational Power"

“...I leave with the knowledge and experience that God has not left a day without transforming my own heart and spirit…never leaving me to face my own sins and shortcomings on my own, but to be met by the deepest grace and compassion…”

Introducing Abigaille as RMM Facilitator

Abigaille joined TCM through the Summer Internship program in 2019 and continued her ministry through various roles such as Communications Coordinator and Outreach Worker. While serving as an Outreach Worker with the Jesse Ketchum community, God grew her heart for mothers and their children. In September 2023, she transitioned into the role of Role Model Moms facilitator in Victoria Village. Abigaille hopes that the moms she works with will invite God into their story and will learn to lean on and trust in Him for guidance and strength in the steps they are taking toward their educational goals.

Introducing Carlijn and Luke as Outreach Workers

Carlijn Balanoy

Luke Goh

As a child advocate with a deep passion for Jesus and writing, Carlijn is thrilled to bring her skills to the Outreach Worker position for TCM to help build resilience in these young hearts. Through meaningful interactions, sharing stories of Jesus' love, and providing a safe space, Carlijn has been able to connect with the children on a deeper level as a Summer Intern for the past two summers. Carlijn hopes that both she and the children will grow in their understanding of Jesus and experience His unlimited love, leaving a lasting impression on their lives.

After serving in TCM’s ministry which included two summers of Sonshine Day Camp and a Year-Long Internship, Luke chose to answer God’s call to serve and love the children and families in the community of Jesse-Ketchum full-time. He witnessed God’s transformational power in the lives of the students and developed a passion for teaching from God’s word and sharing the Gospel. Luke hopes to be a light in Jesse-Ketchum through his actions and character, and that the children and families he serves would come to know who Jesus is.

Outreach Worker Perspective: Karen Hirji

After completing my first full year of KIC, EPIC, and Sonshine Day Camp, I look back with overflowing gratitude. Before onboarding the TCM team, I wasn’t sure how everything would pan out. Jesse Ketchum was a new site, I was a new staff member, I would be working with an entirely new team, and doing my first ministry job. However, in all of this, I have seen how God works in the journey.

Oftentimes, I want things immediately and become disheartened when it doesn’t happen. But what I didn’t realize at the time was that God doesn't always answer prayers with immediate results. I’ve realized that this testimony isn’t about the number of attendees but about God’s faithfulness.

As we wait on Him and wonder what He’s doing, He continues to show us where we need to grow. I’ve learned to enjoy these “journey” seasons because I now know that He is preparing something for us that is much greater than we can ever think, ask, or imagine (Ephesians 3:20)...
