New Year. New Decade. Big Deal?

A New Year’s resolution is a tradition in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life. Sounds like a great idea, but... read more
City Pet License Tags Going Digital

The city of St. Joseph Animal Control and Rescue is upgrading the pet tags issued when pet owners pay their annual registration fee. Animal control & rescue has teamed up with PetHub to issue a smart ID tag for pets which provides an extra layer of protection for pets and their owners. The cost will remain $5 for a city registration tag for spayed or neutered pets and $15 for unaltered pets with the added benefits of PetHub.

Pet owners will have the ability to create a free online account which links their pet's profile to a QR code printed on the registration tag. If a pet escapes or gets lost and is found wearing this tag, the finder can use a smartphone to scan the QR code, view the contact information and immediately contact the owner. Pet owners control what personal information is visible when the QR code is scanned. Pet owners do not have to participate in the online perks of the tag as it will still serve as a city tag without signing up online.

If the finder does not have a smartphone or is unfamiliar with QR codes, there are two other ways to assist in reunification. First, the finder can call the phone number printed on the tag. After providing the license number, the finder will be connected to the owner. Second, the finder can go to the PetHub website, also printed on the tag, enter the license number and view contact information.

New Year, New You

Each new year brings the chance for a fresh start which can be used to make a positive change. This often leads to New Year’s resolutions people all hope to achieve for themselves to make the new year better. However, resolutions can be hard to stick to as the year progresses. Between work schedules, balancing family life and other obstacles, life can get busy so it’s not surprising that we can fall behind on our set goals. No matter your set resolutions, starting with small steps can help you achieve your goals.

Determining a schedule manageable for you which will help you succeed. If you want to lose weight, try simple steps first like cutting out snacks or walking for 30 minutes a day. Ask yourself why you have set these goals. Do you want to lose weight for health reasons or do you have a special event coming up? It is easier to stay motivated when you have a reason. Surround yourself with supportive people and encourage yourself, even when you have bad days.

The St. Joseph REC Center staff can help you achieve your goal of weight loss. The REC Center has a fitness room, a walking track and several fitness classes available to help you succeed with your weight loss goal. Additionally, if you visit the REC Center and check in on Facebook during the month of January, you will have a chance to win a free membership for February, March and April to continue to work on your goal.
What is Design Build?

Design-build is a method of project delivery in which one entity, the design-build team, works under a single contract with the project owner to provide design and construction services. One entity, one contract, one unified flow of work from initial concept through completion. Design-build is also known as design/construct and single-source responsibility. Across the country and around the world, design-build successfully delivers office buildings, schools, stadiums, transportation and water infrastructure projects with superior results.
Design-build is an alternative to design-bid-build. Under the latter approach, design and construction are split - separate entities, separate contracts, separate work. Design-build, design-bid-build and construction management are the three project delivery systems most commonly used in North America. Over the past 15 years, use of design-build has greatly accelerated in the United States, making this delivery method one of the most significant trends in design and construction today.
Design-build streamlines project delivery through a single contract between the owner and the design-build team. This simple but fundamental difference saves money and time by transforming the relationship between designers and builders into an alliance which fosters collaboration and teamwork. United from the outset of every project, an integrated team readily incorporates BIM and LEED certification goals.
The Design-Build Advantages:
  • Faster Delivery: collaborative project management means work is completed faster with fewer problems.
  • Cost Savings: an integrated team is geared toward efficiency and innovation.
  • Better Quality: design-builders meet performance needs, not minimum design requirements, often developing innovations to deliver a better project than initially imagined.
  • Singular Responsibility: one entity is held accountable for cost, schedule and performance.
  • Decreased Administrative Burden: owners can focus on the project rather than managing disparate contracts.
  • Reduced Risk: the design-build team assumes additional risk.
  • Reduced Litigation Claims: by closing warranty gaps owners virtually eliminate litigation claims.
