CITY MANAGER REPORT

August 15, 2025

Community Meeting

A community meeting on the Masonic Home/Zenith LLC project will be held on Thursday, August 21, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Beach Park Auditorium. The meeting will be recorded, and the recording will be posted on the City’s website. Beach Park parking will be validated for attendees.

This meeting will include some of the same information presented to the City Council on August 7, along with responses to the most common questions and concerns we’ve received. While pending litigation limits certain topics we can discuss, we will make every effort to address as many questions as possible within those constraints.

Dock Replacement Project Update

The N Dock transformation is well underway—most of the roofline has been removed, and the new dock should be in place by early next week!

This long-anticipated project will replace aging docks on L, M, and N piers with modern structures featuring upgraded utilities, improved safety and accessibility, and environmentally friendly designs. Work on N Dock began in August, with M and L docks to follow through early 2026.

Thanks to careful planning, most boaters remain moored in the Marina during construction, and we’re grateful to tenants who volunteered to relocate to keep the project on track.

We can’t wait to welcome boaters back to their new slips as each phase wraps up!

City Currents Fall 2025

Keep an eye on your mailbox—our Fall 2025 edition of City Currents will arrive around August 18! This issue is packed with updates on City projects, upcoming events, and community news you won’t want to miss. It’s a great way to stay connected with everything happening in Des Moines.

Neighborhood Pop Up August 18

Join us at Midway Park on Monday, August 18, for our next Neighborhood Pop-Up! Stop by to chat with City staff, ask questions, share ideas, and connect with your neighbors. We’ll be there to listen, answer, and help keep our community strong.

Farmer's Market

Don't Miss Out

Only a few weeks remain in this year’s Des Moines Farmer’s Market season—come on down, enjoy fresh local goods, and stop by to visit with City staff. We’d love to see you there!

Paving Project on State Route 99 in

SeaTac and Des Moines

Contractors are nearly finished repaving 2 miles of SR 99 between South 200th Street and just south of the SR 516 intersection. Work is already complete on an earlier phase of work to upgrade more than 30 sidewalk ramps to modern Americans with Disabilities Act standards along this corridor.

Lane striping

Starting Saturday night, Aug. 16, WSDOT will begin roughly three weeks of nighttime SR 99 lane closures for lane striping. Work will happen from as early as 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Saturday nights through Friday mornings. Striping should wrap up in most areas in early September, weather permitting.

Final paving

Contractor's are expect to finish paving along SR 99 through the SR 516 intersection on Saturday night, Aug. 23. Directional closures will continue at the SR 99/SR 516 intersection overnight on Sunday and Monday nights, Aug. 24-25, for lane striping within this busy intersection. Detours will be in place to guide people around construction.

Thank you for your continued understanding and patience as WSDOT works to make these necessary enhancements.

Community Enrichment Survey Coming Soon

The City of Des Moines Community Enrichment Services Department (formerly Parks, Recreation, Senior Services, Events, and Facility Rentals) is planning the next chapter of recreation programs, activities, events, and facility use—and we want your input! Watch for our upcoming Community Input Survey and help shape the future of fun, connection, and community in Des Moines.

Blues and Brews - August 23

Don’t miss out on Blues and Brews, hosted by the Des Moines Normandy Park Rotary Club! Enjoy great music, local brews, and a fun community atmosphere on Saturday, August 23 in the Des Moines Beach Park. It’s the perfect way to wrap up summer with friends and neighbors. See you there!

Our Fishing Pier Is the Longest Over Puget Sound

The Des Moines Marina fishing pier stretches more than 800 feet, making it one of the longest public piers in Washington. On clear days, you can see both Mount Rainier and the Olympic Mountains from the same spot.

Thank you, as always, to our wonderful and hardworking staff. This Staff Kudos section will serve as a way to recognize and celebrate the hard work and dedication of our City of Des Moines employees, volunteers, Councilmembers, and more.

Staff Kudos

“Thank you for the opportunity to praise the amazing summer team at Camp Khaos!

Every summer we enroll our kids in Camp Khaos (this is our 5th) and we always look forward to seeing a lot of familiar faces! Special shout out to Christine, the gals in the office - Savannah and Kelsey, and of course the legendary Miss Robin.

These ladies know our kids well and never fail to make them feel welcome, safe, and cared for. They run their program in a way that allows our kids to be “kids” while incorporating just enough structure to keep them engaged with their activities and with the other campers. Each day my kids come home tuckered out (in the best way possible) with smiles and stories about their fun day. They especially love the variety of weekly field trips and the trip to the pool every Friday.

We feel so lucky to have this great program in our community and hope the entire staff knows how much we appreciate them!”

With gratitude,

Lindsay Tanzi

“Hi! I'd like give a shoutout/kudos to Savannah, Kelsey and Robin at Camp KHAOS. My kid's attended the camp for a several summers and she's had a blast. I'm grateful for the inclusive environment where my child has felt safe and seen. Big respect to all the counselors! Thank you!”

Thanks,

Jasmine McKenzie
