City Currents


The Spring issue of City Currents will begin mailing to households starting February 23. Be sure to keep an eye on your mailbox for upcoming events, community highlights, and important seasonal information. We look forward to keeping you informed and connected this spring!

Winter Weather Preparedness


Cooler temperatures and rain are in the forecast this weekend. Our Public Works team is actively monitoring conditions to help ensure community safety and maintain critical access routes throughout the city.


Crews will be out checking roadways, addressing areas of standing water, and setting up traffic control if needed in locations impacted by heavier rainfall or high tides.


We encourage residents to use extra caution while traveling—slow down, allow additional stopping distance, and watch for changing road conditions. Thank you for doing your part to help keep our community safe during wet weather.

Reminder! Road Closure Notice: S 240th Street & 16th Ave S


Drivers should plan ahead this weekend as part of the ongoing 16th Avenue South Force Main Project led by the Midway Sewer District.


South 240th Street will be closed to through traffic on Saturday, February 21 and Sunday, February 22, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The closure will extend west from 16th Ave S approximately 300 feet (near the Des Moines Elementary driveway). Signed detour routes will be in place.


Two-way north/south traffic on 16th Ave S will be maintained with flaggers at the intersection; however, there will be no east or west access on S 240th Street during closure hours.


This work supports critical sewer infrastructure upgrades along 16th Ave S between Kent–Des Moines Road and S 252nd Street. We appreciate the community’s patience as these important improvements move forward.

Celebrating Read Across America!


City staff had the pleasure of joining students at St. Philomena School to celebrate Read Across America Day. Team members spent time in classrooms reading with students and sharing in the joy that books bring to young learners. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with our community’s youth and encourage a lifelong love of reading.


A heartfelt thank you to St. Philomena School for inviting us to be part of this special day!


Des Moines’ first post office was established on August 6, 1889—when mail arrived by horseback and later by steamship along Puget Sound. In the early days, mail sacks were unloaded at the dock and hauled by wheelbarrow to be sorted (local children even enjoyed riding in the empty cart!).



After several moves along 6th Avenue and Marine View Drive, the post office settled at 7th Avenue S and S 222nd Street until the late 1980’s. The building was dedicated in 1967, and in 1986 Des Moines officially adopted the ZIP code 98198.



Today, this historic location is home to The Print Place and Allen Medical Aesthetics—a reminder of how our community spaces continue to evolve while remaining rooted in local history.
