12th Man Flag Raising Ceremony

Today’s 12th Man Flag Raising drew a great turnout, with community members coming together in strong Seahawks spirit to show their pride and support. Go Hawks!

Council Meeting Recap

At last night’s City Council Study Session, Council discussed a variety of topics, including future City-sponsored special events such as the Fourth of July celebration, the Holiday Tree Lighting, and more. We’ll share a fuller update with additional details in next week’s report.

Council also received an update on the City’s long-range financial forecast. The discussion highlighted the importance of continuing to reduce operating costs where possible, while also focusing on growing revenue to support essential services. The City is committed to addressing these financial challenges in a transparent and inclusive way. More updates are coming soon, along with opportunities for the community to share input on these important issues.

From Pen to Puget Sound: Salmon Rearing at the Marina

Each year, a salmon rearing pen is installed at the Des Moines Marina to support local fish restoration efforts. This year’s pen installation is scheduled for this Saturday, February 7, around 9:00 a.m., with help from Marina staff and dedicated volunteers, and is sponsored by Northwest Salmon Research. Approximately 30,000 Coho salmon will be delivered to the pen on February 11 and cared for until their release in early April (exact dates to be determined). Volunteers feed the fish about twice daily, and additional help is welcome. Those interested in volunteering can contact Bob Bisordi at the link below.

Understanding the Building Permit Process

The building permit process can sometimes seem overwhelming, but it plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, quality and compliance of structures throughout our community. The building permit process is a partnership between the City and its residents to ensure safe, high-quality structures for everyone. If you are looking to open a new business, remodel your home, or do any other type of project that may need a permit, don’t hesitate to reach out to our Community Development and Permitting staff at 206-870-7576. A phone call or quick meeting before a project can make things go much smoother once construction starts! Pre-application meetings and phone calls with our staff are free and recommended!

Did you know that remnants of the original brick road connecting Des Moines to Seattle were uncovered right here in our community?

During road work at the intersection of 216th Street and Marine View Drive, crews discovered an intact section of the Des Moines–to–Seattle Brick Boulevard — a route laid down in 1916 that replaced footpaths and horse trails with one of the earliest paved roads in the area. Before automobiles became common, local travel relied on walking, horse‑drawn wagons, or the Mosquito Fleet steamboats on Puget Sound. The brick boulevard marked a major milestone in connecting our waterfront town with Seattle, helping shift transportation from the water to land.

This historic find ties us directly to Des Moines’ early transportation era and reminds us of how the city evolved from a rural settlement to the vibrant community we know today.

Thank you, as always, to our wonderful and hardworking staff. This Staff Kudos section will serve as a way to recognize and celebrate the hard work and dedication of our City of Des Moines employees, volunteers, Councilmembers, and more.

Staff Kudos

“Laura (Techico),

Thank you very much for working with us throughout the course of the redevelopment. In my 25 years of working with Walsh, I have not worked in any jurisdiction, that operates as a partner to the whole project team like you all do in Des Moines. That approach makes everyone’s life easier when it comes time to communicate issues and work though any road blocks.  We really appreciate that kind of approach and I wish others would do the same.”
