CITY MANAGER REPORT

March 20, 2026

Marina Steps Project Update

Work on the Marina Steps project is continuing to move forward, with several important construction activities taking place over the next few weeks. Crews will be conducting potholing to locate existing underground utilities, continuing installation of the sewer main, installing stormwater facilities associated with retaining walls, and constructing retaining wall footings on the north end of the project site. During this phase, visitors to the area can expect to see increased construction activity, including equipment and intermittent impacts to access near the work zone. We appreciate the community’s patience as these improvements take shape and will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.

Police Department Joins Judson Park For A Pancake Breakfast

Our Des Moines Police Department had a great time connecting with the community at Judson Park’s “Lumber Jack and Lumber Jill Pancake Breakfast” on Saturday, March 14. The event brought together folks from across south King County for a fun morning filled with pancakes, flannel, and plenty of smiles.

Officers enjoyed joining in on the lumberjack-themed activities—yes, even axe throwing and the photo booth—while supporting a great cause. The fundraiser helps support residents and programs at Judson Park, and it was wonderful to see so many people come out to be part of it.

Thanks to Judson Park for hosting such a fun event and to everyone who stopped by—we love opportunities like this to connect with our community!

Alarm Program Now Available Online

The Des Moines Police Department has partnered with PMAM to make it easier for residents and businesses to register and manage their alarm systems through a new online Alarm Permit Program. All monitored alarm systems in the city are required to be registered, helping officers quickly contact keyholders, maintain accurate information, and reduce unnecessary responses to false alarms. False alarms can take valuable time away from real emergencies, so proper registration and maintenance are key. The new system allows users to easily register their alarm, update contact details, and manage any related fees online.

Spring Recycling Event Coming March 28

Mark your calendars! The City’s Spring Recycling Collection Event is happening on Saturday, March 28, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Des Moines Marina South Parking Lot (enter off of 227th Street). This is a great opportunity to safely dispose of items that can’t go in your regular curbside bins.

Residents can bring a variety of materials, including electronic and computer equipment, TVs, tires, batteries, propane tanks, and more (some fees may apply/cash only). The event will also feature a Rain Barrel and Compost/Worm Bin sale—perfect for getting ready for the spring season!

Please note that cardboard, household goods, clothing, and Styrofoam blocks will not be accepted at this event.

We hope to see you there as we work together to keep our community clean and sustainable!

Nominations for the 2026 Waterland Parade Grand Marshal Now Open!

Do you know someone who truly represents the heart of our community?

Each year, the Waterland Parade honors a Grand Marshal - someone who embodies the spirit, pride, and dedication that makes our community so special. A Grand Marshal is more than just a leader in the parade, they are someone who has made a meaningful impact through service, leadership, kindness, or a lifelong commitment to making our community a better place.

Now it’s your turn to help the Waterland Parade Committee choose this year’s honoree!

If someone comes to mind—whether they’re a quiet volunteer, a community champion, or a local legend—we want to hear about them.

Please email your nomination today and don't forget to include a brief description of why they deserve this honor!

More information on the Waterland Parade route, how to enter and how you can get involved can be found on their website.

Hurry! Nominations are being accepted through April 1st.

Let’s celebrate the people who make our community shine!

Did you know the City of Des Moines has adopted nearly 1,500 resolutions since incorporating in 1959? In fact, we’re now up to Resolution No. 1495! While ordinances create laws, resolutions are used by the City Council to take official action—like approving contracts, adopting policies, or supporting community initiatives. They’re an important tool that helps keep City business moving efficiently while still reflecting the Council’s direction and priorities. Next time you see a resolution on a Council agenda, you’ll know it’s part of a long history of decisions shaping our community!

Thank you, as always, to our wonderful and hardworking staff. This Staff Kudos section will serve as a way to recognize and celebrate the hard work and dedication of our City of Des Moines employees, volunteers, Councilmembers, and more.

Staff Kudos

Shout Out to Records - Great Customer Service:

A property manager in Des Moines was out of the country, but saw activity on the property through surveillance cameras. He called the Police Records line for help. Our team was able to get him connected to dispatch and get officers out to the site to remove the trespassers before anyone got hurt or damaged the property. He sent Chief Boe an email that included:

"I called the number on the website for DMPD. The staff that answered worked with me to get me to dispatch and responded perfectly. Pretty cool for that much success from a call from Uganda. Your team is amazing!"
