City Playgrounds Reopen After COVID-19 Closures in March
The City continues to carefully reopen high-touch surfaces closed in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. Playgrounds are the latest addition to available park amenities, which previously included parks, trails, open spaces, and public restrooms. Benches, picnic tables, and barbecue grills will remain closed.
"With flu season fast approaching and COVID-19 still prevalent, we are acting cautiously to ensure a safe environment by establishing rules so our residents and visitors can enjoy playgrounds again," said Donna Legge, Director of Recreation and Community Services.

County Guidance for a Safe Halloween
Bay Area health officials remind residents that October holiday festivities (Halloween, Día de Los Muertos, etc.) carry a high risk for spreading COVID-19. Focusing on decorations, limiting activities to the people you live with, and virtual costume parties/contests will help keep our communities safe this season. Together, we need to do as much as we can to protect ourselves and those around us.

Flood Preparedness
The City of Los Altos Public Works Department prepares year-round in anticipation of the rainy season. We can reduce the risk of flooding, downed trees, and electrical interruptions caused by fallen branches with your help. For Flood Preparedness Week (October 17-24), we offer guidance and essential resources to keep your family and home safe in case of a flood.
Los Altos is Storm Ready
How our Public Works Department prepares for the rainy season:
- Systematically cleaning all storm drain inlets prior to the rainy season
- Inspecting and clearing debris in difficult to access stormwater ditches
-
Preparing sandbag stations
- Pruning and trimming City trees and removing dead trees caused by the drought
- Inspecting and waterproofing traffic signal related equipment; preparing backup generators for signal outages
- Preparing and maintaining necessary equipment needed to respond to storm events
- Conducting emergency operation drills with the Police Department and Santa Clara County Fire Department to set up an Emergency Operation Center (EOC) in order to practice and prepare for storm and flood response
How You Can Be Storm Ready
- Properly trimming and maintaining street trees on/adjacent to your property (before the rainy season)
-
Collecting and properly disposing of heavy leaf fall before storms occur. Be sure to fill up the yard waste container first; remaining leaves should be left on the lawn until closer to anticipated collection day.
- Do not pile leaves in the gutter before a storm, as this leads to drains becoming clogged and a higher probability of flooding.
- Removing leaves and debris from storm drain inlets with a rake or shovel.
- Report storm-related hazards to the Maintenance Services Division at (650) 947-2785 during regular business hours. After-hours, weekends, and holidays, call the Los Altos Police Department 24/7 non-emergency line at (650) 947-2770.
- Storm-related hazards include street flooding, fallen trees/limbs, plugged storm drains, traffic signal outages, and fallen street signs.
- Use sandbags to protect flood-prone entrances to your home.
-
The City of Los Altos offers two complimentary self-serve sandbag stations at the City’s Municipal Services Center (707 Fremont Avenue) in the McKenzie Park parking lot. Sand, shovels and bags are available 24/7.
