Building Inspectors Hone Damage Assessment Skills
Inspectors from the Building Division attended Safety Assessment training this week. This course expanded the inspector’s skills in assessing a building or structure following a catastrophic event such as an earthquake or fire. Field evaluations of buildings or structures in the immediate aftermath of one of these events is a key step in a recovery effort. Safety personal and the owners of buildings need to understand the condition of the structure before it can be entered. Following this training, inspectors are better equipped to conduct these evaluations and protect the public’s health and safety.

Cal Water - Water Main Upgrade
Cal Water plans to upgrade an existing 4-inch water main to a new 8-inch water main along Covington Road between Springer Road and Miramonte Avenue. The new water main will be installed at the north side of Covington Road using an open trench method. During construction, one travel lane will be closed with traffic control measures in place to ensure sure two-way traffic is maintained at all times. The construction hours are limited between 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to minimize the traffic impacts to the neighborhood. Work is expected to begin next week with potholing of existing utilities and the project is expected to be completed by mid-April 2018. For additional project information, Cal Water can be contacted directly at (650) 917-0152 or visit calwater.com to submit your questions or concerns online.
Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) Program
This week, the City’s consultant, Environmental Engineering & Contracting, Inc. (EEC) started inspections as part of the Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) program. During the FOG inspections, EEC staff check to ensure plumbing, grease traps and interceptors and operational practices are in place to keep grease out of the sewer system. The FOG Program is necessary to fulfill requirements of regional and state permits associated with both the City’s stormwater and sanitary sewer systems. This program helps minimize FOG from entering into the sewer system by educating the food service establishment staff on best management practices to help prevent sewer back-ups and ensure compliance with the City's Municipal Code. There are over 100 food service facilities located within City limits which discharge to the sewer system.
