Public Counter Hour Adjustments
To accommodate the on-going training for implementation of the new permit tracking software system, the Public Counter at City Hall, which includes Planning, Building, Engineering and Finance, will begin closing at 4:00 p.m. daily. Police
Emergency Response Training
This week, the Los Altos Police Department conducted joint emergency response training with the Mountain View Police Department, Santa Clara County Fire Department and Mountain View Fire Department. Training focused on integrating law enforcement and rescue personnel both in the field and at the scene management level.

This type of training builds upon radio interoperability capabilities as well as integrated tactical team movement, all geared toward having a more rapid and effective multi-disciplinary response to mitigate the effects of emergencies.
Love With Lemons
Officer Janda and K-9 Bo recently had the pleasure of meeting a young lady doing big things. Five-year-old Theresa-Ann is spending her summer on a mission to visit law enforcement agencies in 24 California cities, all in 10 days! Theresa-Ann makes lemonade for donations to raise money for fallen officers. She may be little, but she’s touching many hearts along the way.
Public Works
New Stop Signs on Main Street
The City recently conducted a multi-way stop sign installation study at various intersections in downtown Los Altos. The engineering study included analysis of traffic data, accident history and other criteria necessary to evaluate the implementation of multi-way stop control in accordance with the City of Los Altos Stop Sign Policy and Federal and State guidelines. Based on study findings and careful analysis, new multi-way stop signs will be installed at two intersections in Downtown Los Altos: Main and Second Street and Main and Third Street. Multi-way stop control improves safety by facilitating interaction between vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians.

The recent study included a comprehensive analysis of Downtown corridor traffic and how it may be impacted by the installation of stop signs at the selected intersections. The result of this analysis demonstrated no significant adverse traffic impact or delay. The new stop signs will be installed by the City’s maintenance division at the two intersections noted above by Friday, August 3, 2018. Staff will minimize traffic impacts as much as possible while the work is completed. Two-way traffic flow will be maintained; however, slight delays should be expected while signs are installed, and new street striping is painted.

Signal Repair at San Antonio Road/Almond Avenue
There has been reported traffic signal timing issues at the San Antonio Road and Almond Avenue intersection this past week. The City’s traffic maintenance contractor was dispatched to inspect the electrical components. Video detection cameras on northbound and southbound San Antonio Road were found to be offline. Software in the traffic signal control cabinet was rebooted and detection cameras are now functioning, and normal traffic flow has been restored. Engineering staff will continue to monitor these signal lights for any further issues.

Trash Capture Device Routine Cleaning
The City maintenance department cleaned the city’s trash capture device on View Street. This engineered device is installed to prevent trash from reaching local waterways and is approved by the California State Water Board for this purpose. It is located in-line with the City’s storm drain system to capture litter carried by stormwater runoff from part of the Los Altos downtown area. This week, staff cleaned and sorted debris from the device which consisted of about 97% leaves and vegetation and less than 3% trash, including soda cans, straws, snack wrappers, and other metal and plastic litter.

Bid Opening – On-Call Sanitary Sewer Repairs
This week, the City received three bids for the On-Call Sanitary Sewer Spot Repairs and CCTV Inspection Services project. The project includes on-call repairs to the City’s sanitary sewer system on an as-needed basis. Engineering staff anticipates bringing the project to City Council in August for award.
