In recognition of Juneteenth, the City Council raised the Juneteenth flag, which will fly over City Hall through Thursday, June 22, under the City's flag-raising policy. The holiday marks the day—June 19, 1865—Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to free 250,000 people still held in bondage, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. |
