Woodland Library Drought Tolerant Demonstration Garden Plant Book
The Woodland Library received a splash of color and life back in May 2017 when Girl Scout Alyssa Robins worked with community partners to install a drought-resistant demonstration garden as the capstone portion of her Gold Award Girl Scout Service Project. After months of planning and with support from the City of Los Altos, local water retailer Cal Water, GreenTown Los Altos, and other community partners and volunteers, Robbins created a colorful, creative, and inspirational space to be enjoyed by residents and library visitors.
Most recently, Robbins completed an accompanying educational binder, the Woodland Library Drought Tolerant Demonstration Garden Plant Book, that will be displayed in the Woodland Library. The binder includes photos of all the plants growing in the garden, along with fact sheets describing uses, descriptions, management tactics and other interesting information. The garden not only serves as a peaceful, beautiful and educational extension of the Woodland Library, but it provided Robbins a leadership opportunity as she fulfilled her Gold Award project requirements.

City Council & Hillview Community Center Project Task Force Joint Study Session
A
Joint Study Session with City Council and the Hillview Community Center Project Task Force (Task Force) is scheduled for next Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. in the Community Meeting Chambers at City Hall. The Noll & Tam design team, Task Force and staff will provide an update to Council on the progress made to date regarding space allocation, options for site placement and associated costs. Council will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide direction as needed.

CT Zone District and Density Bonus Ordinances
The City Council will be considering the proposed amendments to the CT Zone District and Density Bonus Regulations next Tuesday, September 26, 2017. At its last meeting, the Council provided staff with direction on modifications to the ordinances. Community Development Department staff and the Assistant City Attorney have prepared the modifications which will be considered by the City Council.
Associate Planner Recruitment
The application deadline for the Associate Planner position in the Planning Division of the Community Development Department was this week and an initial review of the applications indicate there are a number of qualified candidates that can be invited for an interview. The vacancy at the Associate Planner position was created when the planner serving in that position was offered a job in another agency. Interviews of candidates will be scheduled in the near future.

Community Emergency Response Team
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Academy kicked off its first class at the Hillview Community Center on September 12, 2017. Chief Andy Galea was on hand to swear in the new CERT students. CERT skills taught by the Santa Clara County Fire Department include personal preparedness, organizing resources, basic medical operations, basic search and rescue, fire extinguisher use, and basic damage assessment. Best of luck to the CERT students, who will graduate at the end of the month after attending seven nightly sessions.

PEP training covers workplace and home safety, earthquake preparedness, when and how to turn gas, electrical and water off and basic fire safety. City-wide Street Improvement Projects
The first phase of the city-wide street improvement project (pothole repairs) has been completed. Phase two, consisting of various street treatments including rubberized chip seal and micro surfacing, will start next week. Each of these treatments is designed to replace, repair or preserve the condition of existing roadway. Transportation Projects Construction Update
Illuminated Lighted Crosswalk: This project replaced three non-functioning in-pavement illuminated crosswalk systems at Almond Avenue and Forway Court, Grant Road and Morton Avenue, and Springer Road and Rose Avenue. Construction is now complete.
W. Edith Avenue and University Avenue Crosswalk Improvement Project: Construction is currently underway on this project. Improvements include a new continental crosswalk, enhanced electronic crosswalk device, new curb ramps, a new concrete bulb-out and minor striping. Students accessing Gardner Bullis Elementary School will benefit from these improvements. We are experiencing a delay in the delivering of electrical equipment including the in-pavement lighted crosswalk and the LED signs. It is anticipated the equipment will be delivered in mid-October and the installation will take a few days once the equipment is on-site. All other work associated the project has been completed.
University Avenue Crosswalk Improvements at Lincoln Avenue and Grant Road: This project includes installation of a raised crosswalk with a rapid flashing beacon warning system at the intersection of University and Lincoln Avenue as well as a curb ramp and crosswalk improvements at the intersection of Burke Road. Construction is substantially complete and the contractor is working on a few punch list items.
Grant Park Center Renovations Update
Crews this week completed the installation of wall paneling in the classrooms, new urinals in the men’s restroom and ADA compliant door closures and hardware on all the facility doors. Paint crews are currently prepping and priming the classrooms ahead of next week’s scheduled paint work.
San Antonio Road (SAR)/El Camino Real (ECR) Intersection Improvements
Improvements for this project include adding a new left turn lane on northbound San Antonio Road, relocating the median island, modifying ADA ramps, conforming the asphalt paving and replacing all traffic signals. Work on the modification of the left turn lane is complete and work is progressing on replacement of curb, gutter, sidewalks and ADA ramps. Grinding and repaving of the asphalt within the intersection is scheduled for next week.
Calwater Water Main Upgrades
California Water Service Company (CalWater) has been working on upgrading water mains in Arboleda Drive, Los Pajaros Court and La Prenda Road. The crew plans to tie-in newly installed water main at Los Pajaros on Thursday, 9/21. Traffic control is in place at all times and the street sweeping is performed on a daily basis. Minimum traffic delay is anticipated. The tentative schedule to complete this project is the end of October.

Qi Gong for Seniors
Anya Kroth, a National Qi Gong Association Instructor will teach a six-week session of Qi Gong beginning Friday, September 15, 2017, 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Senior Center, Room 11. This is a fee based class that can be registered for by calling (650) 947-2797 or coming to the Senior Center, Room 10.
Update: Hand Massage Time Change
Hand massage will be offered on a first come first serve basis from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Room 10 of the Hillview Community Center.
LAYC Dance

Intergenerational Tech Tutor Workshop is back by popular demand! Bring your electronic device such as a laptop, cellphone or tablet and our team of high school volunteers are here to help. Tech tutoring will he held each Wednesday beginning Wednesday, September 20, 2017 through Wednesday, February 21, 2018 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the computer lab at the Hillview Community Center, located at 97 Hillview Avenue.
