Learn how you can assist your community in times of emergency
In the event of an area wide disaster, such as the recent floods in Texas, critical infrastructure and emergency services will be impacted. Some of the most inspiring stories emerging from the devastation in Houston are those of how the community has come together to help one another. If these stories resonate with you and you’ve been moved to learn how you might be of assistance, please consider joining the City of Los Altos Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) academy which begins September 12.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) academy trains residents to prepare for and respond to life-threatening events in their community. CERTs strengthen neighborhood resiliency and play a vital role in their City’s disaster response efforts. CERT members can mobilize neighborhood resources, deliver immediate assistance to victims, organize emergency communications and provide support to first responders.
The CERT academy consists of 6 nightly sessions and a final skills exercise. Students must attend all 7 class meetings to receive a Certificate of Completion.
Dates:
September 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, and 28 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and September 30, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Hillview Community Center Project Task Force
The Hillview Community Center Project Task Force will meet on Monday, September 11, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at the Los Altos Youth Center. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. Task Force members will continue their discussions with the Noll & Tam design team to form a recommendation on interior space allocation and building site plan. The Task Force plans to report their progress to City Council at a Study Session scheduled for September 26, 2017. City Council will have an opportunity to provide comments, ask questions and provide direction to the Task Force.

Downtown Vision
The Consultant team and staff provided updates this week on the Downtown Visioning process to the Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee and the Los Altos Community Coalition. The focus for the Downtown Visioning has been to update the future scenarios developed to serve as a mechanism to gather additional community input, and develop a fourth scenario in line with direction provided by City Council at the August 22 City Council meeting. Loyola Corners Specific Plan
Last night, the Planning and Transportation Commission completed their review of the amendments to the Loyola Corners Specific Plan. The Commission developed several recommendations on the plan for the City Council to consider. Consideration of the Specific Plan is slated for consideration by the City Council at its September 26 meeting. You may

Water Main Upgrade Project
California Water Service Company (CalWater) has completed the pipe installation at Los Pajaros Court and La Prenda Road. Crews are currently working on Arboleda Drive between Cuesta Drive and Campbell Avenue and will complete this section by the end of this week. Next week, CalWater will begin construction on Arboleda Drive between Campbell Avenue and Springer Road. The tentative schedule to complete this improvement project is October, 2017.
San Antonio Road/El Camino Real Intersection Improvements
The contractor has completed installation of new traffic signal poles, which are all now energized. The old traffic signal poles are in the process of being removed. The construction of the new left turn pocket at the median island will commence after Caltrans inspectors approve work recently completed by the contractor.
Stormwater Annual Report (FY2016-17)
Engineering staff completed the first draft of the Stormwater Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2016-17 this week and sent it to the Santa Clara Valley Urban Runoff Pollution Prevention Program (SCVURPPP) staff for review and comment. The Stormwater Annual Report will be submitted to the Water Board at the end of this month.
Downtown Los Altos Flower Planting
City maintenance crews will concentrate their efforts to begin changing the downtown intersection flowers out. The summer colors have exhausted their brilliance, it’s time to showcase fall colors. Orders have been placed and staff will begin work next week. Our crews will concentrate on the larger pots that are at the intersections and will finish with the saucer type pedestal pots the following week. The updated landscaping will provide a beautiful setting for the upcoming

Grant Park Community Center Updates
Exciting news: the floor was redone in the multi-purpose room at Grant Park. Additional improvements are forthcoming.
Tiny Tots
Tiny Tots had an extraordinary first week with children enjoying the three Los Altos Recreation Tiny Tot programs. The KinderPrep program, which takes place at the Hillview Community Center is full at 15 children with many returning families. Children busied themselves with playdough, paints, play cars, blocks, water beads, and other fun creative play activities in Terrific 3’s and Fabulous 4’s. This week children began learning about the letter “A”! Did you know that if plan “A” fails, you have 25 more letters to try? There is still limited room in the 3’s and 4’s programs both of which are held at the San Antonio Club. Interested parents should call (650) 947-2890 to learn more about the program!
Mah Jongg Course
Mah Jongg started this week at the Senior Center located at the Hillview Community Center. This program is being offered every Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for those interested in learning how to play. For more information please call (650) 947-2797.

Upcoming Personal Emergency Preparedness Training
September is National Emergency Preparedness month and the City of Los Altos is pleased to partner with Santa Clara County Fire Department to bring emergency preparedness training to Los Altos. Life-threatening emergencies can happen fast and they can happen anywhere. Learn how you can help yourself and others, until help arrives.
Personal Emergency Preparedness (PEP) Training
PEP training covers workplace and home safety, earthquake preparedness, when and how to turn gas, electrical and water off and basic fire safety. This free, 3-hour PEP course is being offered on Saturday, September 23, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. – noon at Hillview Community Center. First Street Green Project

Savannah Chanelle Winery Outing
The Senior Program welcomes residents on a wonderful excursion to Savannah Chanelle Winery located in the beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains! We have a one hour tour with a tasting of five different wines scheduled. The tour goes through the vineyards and the cellar, including the history of the winery. Participants are encouraged to wear supportive shoes; the tour goes down stairs and on gravel surfaces. Lunch in the winery’s picnic area follows. A menu is available to select your lunch.
