City Manager and Mayor for the Day
The City of Seal Beach was honored to host young leaders Ellis and Jonathan as our City Manager and Mayor for a Day. This extraordinary experience, made possible by Project SEEK, offered a unique opportunity to inspire the next generation of civic engagement. Two lucky McGaugh Elementary students, Ellis (pictured below, right) and Jonathan (pictured below, left), had an incredible experience exploring the heart of our City. Their whirlwind day as City Manager and Mayor was a testament to the power of civic engagement and the importance of inspiring our youth. From the moment they donned their official badges, Ellis and Jonathan immersed themselves in the role, gaining invaluable insights into the complexities of municipal government. Their tour encompassed a wide range of City departments, including Public Works, Finance, Community Development, City Clerk, Lifeguards, and a tour of the Police Substation. They met with dedicated staff, learned about essential services, and even had the opportunity to sit in the Mayor's and City Manager’s chair in the City Council Chambers to experience firsthand the responsibilities of leadership. The day culminated in a tour of our vibrant downtown area, where they toured Main Street businesses and were treated with ice cream for their efforts. Upon departure, the students were given a swag bag of City of Seal Beach mementos, and our staff was left with the impression that our future government was in good hands. Project SEEK is a remarkable organization that has been instrumental in enriching the lives of McGaugh Elementary School students for over three decades. Their commitment to fostering academic excellence and creating opportunities for local students to explore diverse career paths is truly commendable. The City of Seal Beach is proud to support Project SEEK's mission and looks forward to future collaborations that benefit our community.

Tragic Drowning Near River's End Park
At approximately 8:15 p.m. Orange County Fire Authority recently received a call of a reported person drowning in the jetty near River’s End Park in Seal Beach. The OCFA initiated a Swift Water Rescue response including paramedic units, ambulance, water rescue units and a helicopter. In conjunction with Seal Beach, Huntington Beach and Long Beach lifeguards, a search was initiated. Command members also received reports of a possibility of two more victims in the water and ordered additional paramedic units and ambulances. Resources including multiple helicopters, a dive team, rescue boats and lifeguards were utilized to locate and extricate the victim. The male was brought to shore and lifesaving measures were initiated by paramedic firefighters from Seal Beach Engine 48. The male was rapidly transported to Los Alamitos Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased by physicians.
Tragic events such as this reinforce the importance of water safety. Approximately 50-75% of drownings happen in open waters such as the ocean, lakes, rivers, and ponds. It’s not just children that are at risk of drowning, adults can easily fall victim as well. It’s important that we all take precautions to keep ourselves and those around us as safe as possible. Considerations such as never swimming alone or while intoxicated, being aware of rip currents and other hazards, swimming near lifeguard towers, and checking the weather, water, and surfing conditions before entering the water.

Hosted VIPS General Meeting - The Volunteer in Police Service (VIPS) general meeting was a valuable opportunity to bring together all volunteers and discuss the current status of the program. With summer being one of the busiest times of the year, the meeting focused on the challenges and opportunities that come with increased activity in the community. We also took the time to express our deep appreciation for the volunteers' unwavering support, particularly during the busy month of July at the substation. Their dedication and commitment help ensure that our operations run smoothly, and their efforts do not go unnoticed.

Hosted a Station Tour for a Young Seal Beach Resident - We had the pleasure of hosting a station tour for a three-year-old Seal Beach resident who has an incredible fascination with police officers. The young visitor was given a special tour of the station, where he had the chance to see police vehicles, meet officers, and learn about the various tools and equipment used in daily police work. This experience not only made a lasting impression on the young boy but also served as a reminder of the impact our work has on the youngest members of our community.

Preparation for McGaugh Elementary School's First Day of School - As the first day of school at McGaugh Elementary approached, we actively prepared to ensure the safety and smooth operation of all activities. This involved coordinating with school staff, crossing guards, and local traffic enforcement to manage the increased traffic and pedestrian activity that accompanies the start of a new school year. Our goal was to provide a safe and welcoming environment for students, parents, and teachers as they began another academic year.

Working to Improve Technology in Parking Control Vehicle Fleet - We are currently focused on enhancing the technology used in our parking control vehicle fleet.
