Sammy Finds a New Home at the Library

July 16th would have been the birthday of late Seal Beach resident, Adriana Blackstone. To celebrate her birthday, family and friends gathered in front of "Sammy the Seal" at the Mary Wilson Library in remembrance of Adriana's well lived life.

After her passing, her family donated her special seal carved in wood (she called it Sammy the Seal), to the City of Seal Beach for display in the lobby of the Mary Wilson Library, for all residents and visitors to enjoy.

Adriana loved Seal Beach and treasured her Sammy the Seal. Her family believes she would be very happy to know that he will be shared with all who enter the library.

Water Services Employee Receives Certification

Our Public Works staff are consistently furthering their skills in their field of expertise. This past week, Michael LaPlante from our Utilities Division received his certification from the American Water Works Association (AWWA) by passing a well-known difficult written and hands on backflow test. He is now certified to test backflows for the City. A Backflow Preventer is used to prevent drinking water from being contaminated due to a backflow condition in the water system. Congratulations, Michael!

New Backflow and Protector

To address the ongoing theft of copper and brass materials used in backflows, Jack and Mario (not pictured) from our Water Maintenance team installed a protective cage around the new backflow at the Lampson Well site.  Furthermore, Public Works is working in partnership with the Police Department to install additional security protection measures to protect the City’s facilities and assets.

Pothole Repairs

Using the new MySealBeach app, residents notified the City of several potholes throughout the city. Public Works staff Orlando and Frank used the cold patching method to fill the potholes temporarily. A more permanent solution is forthcoming.

The Power of Social Media

On Saturday, July 20th, officers took a theft report regarding an unknown female subject who stole a bronze figurine from Alamitos Antiques, located at 211 Main St. last Thursday. The loss was reported to be about $800. On Tuesday, July 23rd, the SBPD Social Media team published a post to Facebook/Instagram regarding the theft and provided surveillance images of the suspect. The post about the missing "Three Graces" sculpture was shared to over 100 accounts and reached over 22,000 people.

Local news outlets who follow the SBPD accounts picked up the story as well. The SBPD detective bureau received some solid leads from the community and with those leads, the detectives identified a suspect. The suspect, or someone who knows the suspect, called the SBPD detectives and left a voicemail, indicating that she would arrange payment or restitution for the sculpture (voluntarily). Detectives later learned the business received payment overnight for the sculpture, along with an apology note. Even though this was done, the SBPD is still actively investigating this incident and similar incidents to make sure additional businesses have not been victimized. Once the investigation is complete, it will be forwarded to the Orange County District Attorney's Office for review. Seal Beach Police Department VIP, Don Murray Featured in National Police Association Article:

'Volunteers in Policing' Work Thousands of Hours to Enhance Public Safety Mission

By Stephen Owsinski

Excerpt follows:

'Privileged to Assist Our Officers'

On the West Coast of the U.S., the Seal Beach, California, police department is fortunate to have among its staff VIP member Don Murray, who has dedicated over 11,000 hours of his life to the citizens of the city and the men and women who serve its public safety mission.

Via Seal Beach police Sgt. Brian Gray who graciously conveyed a bio touting VIP Murray’s personal and professional achievements, I reviewed the storied life of this cherished police volunteer who, in earlier years, was a Major League Baseball prospect of the Chicago White Sox and Anaheim Angels (formerly the California Angels).

Besides running around the athletic bases, Mr. Murray spent time on US Air Force bases as a jet engine mechanic, with a stint in Japan. He is no stranger to serving others with discipline and pride in workmanship, all of which benefits others.

VIP Murray is pictured in our cover photo (courtesy of the Seal Beach PD), buffing one of their police cruisers, ensuring the department’s fleet has a rolling reputation for professional policing with gleam.

In the robust information from Sgt. Gray, the selfless service of VIP Murray deservedly garnered the abundant accolades one would expect from a police volunteer who has given 11,000 hours (and counting) since joining the police force in 2014.

You’d think that anyone volunteering beyond 11,000 hours would take some wind out of their sails. Not so for VIP Murray who also donates his time working as a “Volunteer Guide on the USS Iowa,” anchored in San Pedro, California.

Thanks to Sgt. Gray for sharing the outstanding principles when describing the characteristics and traits of VIP Murray: “He is a very likable, outgoing man. Don feels privileged to assist our officers.”

Volunteers In Policing are themselves Very Important Persons in the scheme of things, selflessly serving citizens who justly rely on law enforcement entities to deliver bona fide public safety covenants by sworn officers who are privileged to have dedicated individuals in their presence.
