Meet Girl Scout Ava Waggoner

My name is Ava Waggoner, and I am a Girl Scout who loves nature, the beach, and animals! As an Ambassador in Girl Scouts, I am currently working with the City of Seal Beach to complete a large community service project called the Gold Award. For my Gold Award, I have chosen to spread awareness about how trash ends up in Seal Beach by flowing down the San Gabriel River, and what we can do to help! The components of my project include adding informational signage and replanting native plants in the 1st Street Beach Parking Lot. By beatifying this area, I hope to motivate people to help keep our beaches clean and educate people visiting the beach about how they can stop the flow of trash that is hurting our sea animals. I am so excited and grateful to help improve this already wonderful beach!

  • On September 15, Marine Safety hosted its first-ever Fall ocean lifeguard tryout. This was aimed at attracting more qualified candidates for the Spring lifeguard academy and the Summer 2025 hiring process. A total of twelve candidates participated in the distance swim, run-swim-run event, and interview process. As a result, eight candidates were invited to join the Basic Lifeguard Academy, which spans four weekends. To become a Seal Beach Lifeguard trainees must complete 100 hours of training. An additional tryout will be scheduled in Spring 2025.
  • The shoulder season (the period of time between peak and off seasons) has arrived. Weekend crowds still require lifeguard towers to remain open in the most populated areas. During the weekdays, lifeguards are on patrol in units. Staffing will continue to taper down throughout the next two weeks.
  • Always swim near a lifeguard.
