Flex Alerts are issued by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) as a voluntary call for consumers to conserve electricity when the grid is under stress. These shortages can occur as a result of generation or transmission outages or from persistent hot temperatures. Reducing electricity use during these times can prevent possible power outages.
Flex Alerts are often issued for “peak” demand times, like 4 pm -9 pm or 3 pm -10 pm. To help out on a Flex Alert day, you can pre-cool your home, use major appliances early in the day, and use drapes to cover windows and keep the heat out. During the Flex Alert, try setting your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher (if health permits), avoid using major appliances and charging electric vehicles, and turn off all unnecessary lights.
