On July 18, 2022, City staff will provide a presentation on the 2023-2031 Housing Element Update to the City Council. The meeting agenda and materials will be posted online at Meeting Central in advance of the meeting. Following the public comment period, the City will submit an updated version of the draft Housing Element to the State department of Housing and Community Development for review.
The Housing Element is a mandatory element of the City’s General Plan that provides a comprehensive strategy for promoting the production of available, affordable, and adequate housing within the community. The Housing Element addresses housing needs across the economic and social spectrum, including people with special needs. To ensure that the Housing Element represents the values and ideas of San Leandro’s diverse population, we want to hear from as many people as possible! Please spread the word to members of your organization or community group.

CalFire Tree Grant Work
The City kicked off its CalFire tree grant work with Common Vision with a community tree planting at Toyon Park on Thurs Jun 30 at 9am-12pm. This was the first 12 of the 5,000 street trees to be planted within the City from the grant over the next four years. 10,000 treelings will also be distributed for planting on private property.
The $1.49M Urban and Community Forestry grant will cover trees for planting, tree supplies, and hiring of part time staff. Paired with this year’s development of the Tree Master Plan, this will kick off concrete steps to addressing climate adaptation, air pollution, urban shade, and urban heat islands, particularly in frontline communities that currently experience the brunt of environmental injustices.
The City will be partnering with Common Vision for the tree planting and volunteer management, as well as collaborating with a number of community-based organizations for outreach.
Find out more about upcoming tree plantings and volunteer opportunities at sanleandro.org/sustainability. If you are interested in having a street tree planted on your property, sign up at tinyurl.com/SL-Trees. For all other organizational collaborations or partnerships, reach out to Dr. Hoi-Fei Mok at sustainablesl@sanleandro.org.

Recycling Program’s Spring Events 2022
After a two-year hiatus due to the global pandemic, our Recycling Program’s events returned this Spring. We successfully implemented a new online registration for our events to ensure the safety of our participants and staff. More than 900 households participated in recycling our events.
During our Shredding and Techno Trash Recycling Event, residents were able to shred their documents containing personal and confidential information and safe disposal of techno trash (floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, jewel cases, audio and video tapes). During our Compost Giveaway Event, residents received two bags of compost for their gardens.
The Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program, in partnership with the City of San Leandro, held a one stop recycling event for Alameda County residents. Residents recycled 7 tons of hazardous chemicals and materials, 10 tons of electronic waste and 2 tons of fluorescent bulbs, lamps, and household batteries during the event.
The community expressed their appreciation for the return of our recycling events. Residents were grateful of having the opportunity to dispose of sensitive documents and having the option of properly recycling old and unwanted electronic media, rather than having these items end up in the trash. Residents were also grateful for receiving compost to beautify their gardens. These events support the City’s waste reduction efforts and raised awareness about recycling every day.
