City Manager's Report

January 24, 2025 | FayettevilleNC.gov

The Latest from Doug

As we recover from the winter weather this week, I want to reflect on the incredible efforts made by our city staff and share updates on our services. Over the past several days, our Street Maintenance teams worked tirelessly, treating approximately 40% of city-maintained roadways, covering more than 275 miles with sand to improve traction during and following the storm. While much of the snow melted during the day, shaded areas remained snow-covered, and overnight temperatures created hazardous black ice conditions. We appreciated everyone’s cooperation by avoiding driving after dark to prioritize safety.

Emergency response teams, including police, fire, and street crews, were on high alert and ready to respond to incidents, including downed trees or powerlines. Their swift action and dedication ensured our community was supported throughout the weather challenges.

City services were adjusted during the weather event to ensure the safety of our staff and residents. Solid Waste services have resumed and appreciate residents’ patience and understanding with the delay. We encourage residents to place their rollout carts out as our teams are already out collecting household waste as quickly as possible. Yard waste collection is still suspended for another week. FAST transit services and Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation Centers did operate on an abbreviated schedule during the storm but are now open. I encourage everyone to double check FCPR.us to ensure an activity you signed up for is back on a regular schedule.

Now, as temperatures begin to warm and hopefully continue to increase, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our dedicated staff who worked diligently to ensure the safety and functionality of our city. Their tireless efforts—often in the most challenging conditions—are a testament to their professionalism and commitment to serving Fayetteville. They truly are the unsung heroes of our community.

Thank you to everyone for your patience and cooperation during this time. Let’s look forward to brighter, warmer days ahead!

Best,

Douglas J. Hewett
