I am thrilled to share the remarkable achievement of Assistant City Manager Jeffrey Yates, who recently received the International City/County Management Association (ICMA)'s Credentialed Manager Candidate designation, a testament to his dedication and expertise. Mr. Yates will officially become an ICMA Credentialed Manager on Nov. 1, 2025. I wanted to highlight this recognition as it underscores his significant experience and commitment to the highest standards in local government leadership which will lend itself to the continued success of our City.
Additionally, I would like to recognize one of our former Fayetteville Regional Airport Director, Dr. Toney Coleman, for his commitment of 30 years of service to the City and elated that Senator Val Applewhite was able to present him with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award on Jan. 22 with our City Council.
As we look ahead to this weekend, Fayetteville offers a myriad of activities for residents of all ages. Explore the City Market at the Museum, a year-round open-air market featuring local produce and artisanal creations. Additionally, don't miss the new Orange Street School exhibit at the Fayetteville History Museum, a tribute to Black History Month and available to view on Feb. 1. This exhibit will focus on the story of the Orange Street School. Constructed in 1914 -1915 as a public grade school for African American children.
There is also ample opportunity to socialize in our Downtown Social District, you can consider trying fly-fishing or refining your skills through a guided course at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Center down the road from the Bill Crisp Sr. Center or even join the Cumberland County Health Department's program on establishing a healthy eating lifestyle or enjoy a LEGO free play session, each hosted through the Cumberland County Library system. So many opportunities throughout our wonderful community.
Before I end this, I wanted to let everyone know that starting Monday, Jan. 29, the Kiwanis playground will kickoff an exciting transformation. The playground will be removed to pave the way for a new and improved space. Anticipate the installation taking about a month and it will include cutting-edge equipment, accompanied by a stone base and rubber fill, all aimed at providing a safer and more enjoyable environment for our community.
