The Latest from Doug

Summer has been a season of growth and inspiration for our City as we welcomed a group of talented and motivated students through the ICON Summer Internship program. These 14 exceptional young minds from Cumberland County High Schools have been working diligently in various departments within the City of Fayetteville. We are immensely proud to support this work-based learning initiative that fosters educational and career development while offering invaluable experiences within our City government.

The ICON Summer Internship program has been a resounding success. They have gained firsthand exposure to real-life work activities and honed essential work readiness skills. Through this program, we aim to nurture the next generation of leaders and professionals who will one day contribute to the betterment of our beloved community.

As we continue to invest in our youth, I am thrilled to highlight a remarkable initiative through our Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation, the Fayetteville-Cumberland Youth Council. FCYC operates as a youth-led organization dedicated to promoting and improving our community. Serving as a cross-generational link, this council actively engages in service projects and social events that foster character building and leadership development among our youth. We would like to send an invitation to those who might be interested in joining this award-winning council. They will be having an interest meeting on Monday, August 7 from 6 to 7:30 pm at the FCYC building, 725 W. Rowan St.

The involvement of our youth in civic engagement is significant for the sustainable growth and prosperity of our City. Youth bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by their generation. Our commitment to youth civic engagement is one reason we won the All-America City award. By empowering them to be active participants in community affairs, we ensure that their voices are heard and their concerns are addressed.

Let us continue to support and encourage our youth to actively participate in civic affairs, contributing to a brighter and more prosperous Fayetteville.

Best regards,

Doug

Practice Heat Safety Wherever You Are

The summer weather has arrived in Fayetteville! It's important to practice summer safety to beat the heat when temperatures are high. Warm temperatures can quickly rise to dangerous levels — especially in the summer and in parked cars.

  1. High temperatures are no joke! Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to avoid heat exhaustion.
  2. Hot weather tip: Wear loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothing to help your body stay cool. Don't forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses!
  3. It's important to drink plenty of water during hot weather to prevent dehydration. Stay hydrated and remember to refill your water bottle regularly!
  4. Stay cool and safe! Find shade or cool indoor spaces, and use fans or air conditioners to beat the heat. Don't forget to check on elderly neighbors and those without access to AC.
  5. Keep your pets safe in the heat too! Provide shade, fresh water, and never leave them in a parked car. Their paws can get burnt on hot pavement, so take walks during cooler times of the day.
  6. Hot car = danger zone! Never leave children, pets, or vulnerable individuals unattended in vehicles. Even a few minutes can be life-threatening.
  7. Heat stroke is a medical emergency! Be aware of the signs: high body temperature, rapid pulse, headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. Call 9-1-1 if you or someone else shows these symptoms.
  8. Splash zone activated! Enjoy water activities! Visit our Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation pools and splash pads. Find your nearest one at: FCPR.us/Aquatics
  9. When exercising in the heat, choose cooler times of the day, hydrate before, during, and after your workout, and listen to your body's signals. Stay safe while staying active!

Stay safe and beat the heat!
