Winning the All-America City Award is a tremendous achievement that recognizes exceptional civic accomplishments and collaboration within a community. Our delegation traveled to Denver, CO last weekend to showcase the inspiring initiatives and collaborative efforts that have engaged our youth, shaping a brighter future for Fayetteville, and it was well received. I’m excited to announce that we are now a 4-time winner of the prestigious award. Winning the All-America City Award not only celebrates our past accomplishments but also serves as a catalyst for our City’s future growth, attracting resources, support, and investment to further enhance the community's well-being and quality of life. Together, we are an All-America City.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It holds immense significance as a celebration of freedom, equality, and the ongoing struggle for civil rights.
Today, we kicked the Juneteenth weekend celebrations off by unveiling a civil rights historical marker honoring the brave individuals who led marches and sit-ins in 1963, working tirelessly to end discrimination at businesses in Downtown Fayetteville. Their unwavering dedication paved the way for positive change and social justice. By recognizing Juneteenth and this historical movement in 1963, we honor the struggle for freedom, acknowledge the contributions of African Americans, and commit to building a more inclusive and equitable City and society for all.
I want to personally invite you to participate in this weekend’s second annual two-day Juneteenth Jubilee at Festival Park in Downtown Fayetteville. This celebration will feature live entertainment, good food, and lots of fun to bring our community together. Through active involvement in Juneteenth events, we actively work towards building a more inclusive and equitable society for future generations.
Lastly, please take time on Sunday to recognize, appreciate or remember your Father or Father figure. It is a day dedicated to expressing gratitude and love towards those individuals in our lives.
Best,
Doug
