The Latest from Doug

I hope everyone has a chance to enjoy Downtown Fayetteville for tonight’s Fayetteville after Five.

This popular outdoor concert series brings together residents and visitors for an unforgettable experience. I know the air will be filled with the rhythm of live music as “On the Border” will take the stage, creating a lively and festive atmosphere. They are a renowned local band who pays tribute to the Eagles who I know will surely make for a great time. Local vendors will also be onsite for your favorite food and beverages. These events are truly a celebration of community, showcasing the city's vibrant culture and fostering a sense of togetherness. I hope that Fayetteville after Five is an unforgettable experience for everyone who attends and showcases the lively and diverse spirit of Fayetteville.

While in the area, I encourage visitors to explore and immerse themselves in what our downtown has been transformed into, offering a variety of delicious cuisines, shops and boutiques.

I wanted to reiterate that Monday, June 12 is the public hearing for our budget. I feel that participating in the public hearing during the budget process is extremely important. It allows you to engage in shaping our community's financial decisions. I want to ensure we provide transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, in every step along the way, with a goal that diverse perspectives are heard and considered. My goal has always been to empower residents to actively participate in local governance, because then residents become informed stakeholders, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility towards their community's well-being. I look forward to seeing each of you and hearing your thoughts on Monday.

Best,

Doug

Civil Rights Historical Marker Unveiling

On behalf of the City of Fayetteville, we would like to invite you to the Unveiling of a Civil Rights Historical Marker in Downtown Fayetteville on Friday, June 16 at 11 A.M. This marker honors and recognizes those who led marches and sit-Ins to end discrimination at businesses in Downtown Fayetteville in 1963. This ceremony will take place at 116 Green St. and the marker will be installed outside the southwest corner of the Fascinate U museum.

Why this is a monumental moment for the Fayetteville Community:

During the summer of 1963, residents organized various activities that protested racial segregation in Fayetteville. Often demonstrations like picketing and marching culminated in downtown, where they also conducted sit-ins at businesses along Hay Street. The community’s actions resulted in the necessary political pressure to influence elected leaders to enact policy directing businesses to desegregate Fayetteville one year before the federal government adopted the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
