Today marks the first day of spring—an exciting season of fresh growth and new beginnings. As the flowers start to bloom and the warmer weather arrives, it’s a wonderful reminder that change can bring new energy and optimism to our organization and community.
One such new chapter for us was on full display during the recent retirement ceremony for our outgoing Chief of Police. The heartfelt send-off demonstrated our deep appreciation for his years of dedicated service. While we are grateful for his leadership and commitment to keeping our city safe, we look forward to embracing new ideas and directions in the coming months once a new chief has been selected. Assistant Police Chief Todd Joyce will be serving as the interim until a new Chief of Police is selected.
We also saw signs of progress on Monday during the Joint City-County Liaison Committee Meeting. Members of our Fayetteville City Council joined county leaders to discuss economic development priorities, including affordable housing, workforce development programs, support for small businesses, and enhancements to our downtown area.
In keeping with the spirit of forward motion and collaboration, the Committee unanimously directed City and County staff to explore programs for poverty reduction and workforce development, with more details to be presented at the May meeting. The Committee also requested staff evaluate the regional transportation plan to ensure it aligns with economic development goals for our city, county, and neighboring communities. Solutions for childcare-related issues discussed earlier will also be presented in May.
Finally, for those looking for a family-friendly event that showcases the dedication and skill of our transit operators, the Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST) will hold its Annual Bus Roadeo on Sunday, March 23rd, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 455 Grove Street. Everyone is invited to cheer on our Fixed Route and Paratransit operators as they navigate an obstacle course for cash prizes, bragging rights, and the chance to represent our City at the NC State Transit Roadeo in Cherokee next month. It’s free and open to the public, so bring your family and enjoy the fun!
As we embrace this season of renewal, let us remember that every fresh start offers us the chance to envision greater possibilities. Thank you for all you do to make Fayetteville a wonderful community. I look forward to all the exciting developments this spring will bring.
Best,
Douglas J. Hewett
