As we celebrate Mother’s Day Sunday, May 11, I encourage you to pause and honor the mothers who nurture, guide, and uplift our community every day. Whether it’s the mother who inspires us with her strength, the parent who balances work and family with grace, or the support “mom” figure who lends a listening ear, today is our chance to say “thank you.” We encourage you to reach out—whether by a simple phone call, a handwritten note, or a shared moment over coffee—to show appreciation for the love, sacrifices, and unwavering dedication that mothers provide.
Next week is National Police Week and in observance of this, a wreath-laying ceremony on Monday, May 12, 2025, at 10:30 am will be held in front of the Fayetteville Police Department. This solemn event honors the service and sacrifice of our law enforcement officers, past and present. All residents are invited to attend, stand in solidarity with our officers, and reflect on the courageous role they play in keeping our city safe.
To keep our children busy and occupied this summer, Fayetteville Parks & Recreation offers families a variety of camps and athletic programs designed to keep kids active, creative, and engaged. Our popular Summer Day Camp runs weekdays from May 27 through August 15 with no camp on June 19 or July 4. This will be at ten recreation centers citywide, serving children who have completed kindergarten through age 12. Registration is open: weekly rates of $90 for residents and $180 for non-residents; early drop-off and late pick-up options are available for an additional fee.
For older youth, Youth Sports Camps cover basketball, football, cheer, soccer, softball, volleyball, baseball, swimming, and tennis. Camps generally meet from 9 am to noon, with most sessions priced at $50 for resident and $100 for a non-resident. Swim camps are $120/$240, and tennis sessions include snacks and water. Dates vary by sport—basketball, football, and cheer run June 9–13; soccer June 23–27; softball July 7–11; volleyball July 21–25; baseball July 28–August 1; and swim and tennis sessions span May through August. Find full schedules and register online.
Finally, a reminder that my recommended FY 2026 Budget will be formally presented to City Council on Monday, May 12, 2025. This proposal outlines our strategic investments in public safety, infrastructure, parks and recreation, and community services—ensuring Fayetteville remains America’s Can-Do City. Then it will be Council’s budget to adjust and revise as they see necessary. Residents are welcome to join the Council meeting to hear the full presentation and provide public comment on May 27.
Thank you for staying engaged with our City’s programs and milestones. We look forward to a vibrant summer and meaningful community moments ahead!
Best,
Douglas J. Hewett
