As Veterans Day weekend approaches, I wanted to take moment to recognize and honor the remarkable men and women who have served our country. At the city, we remain dedicated to supporting our veterans, both in recognition of their service and as a commitment to their futures. Whether it’s through employment opportunities or community resources and programs, we’re here to stand by those who have stood by us.

Today, we were honored to recognize fallen servicemembers and first responders at the Fayetteville Regional Airport with the unveiling of the 12th Flag to Remember right here in Fayetteville. This unique flag holds 73 names nominated by the families and friends of fallen heroes from across the nation.

This commemorative flag, known as flag 12, joins others proudly displayed across our city at places like Segra Stadium, Cape Fear Hospice, Charlie Mike’s Pub, and several Veterans of Foreign Wars locations. Each flag tells a story of loss, love, and enduring respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our safety and freedom.

The airport partnered with Flag to Remember, a nonprofit founded by active-duty soldier Anthony Peterson, whose own journey through grief inspired him to create a way for others to find healing. Through Flags to Remember, families are given a chance to honor their loved ones in a way that connects us all and ensures that their memory lives on.

There is no better place to recognize service of our veterans than here in Fayetteville—the largest neighbor to the largest military installation in the world. I invite you to take some time this weekend to reflect on the legacy of our veterans and fallen heroes and visit the Airborne & Special Operations Museum, Veterans Park, and Freedom Memorial Park.

Missing Man Table 2024 - Veterans Park

Every year, the City of Fayetteville places a Missing Man Table in various city buildings during the Veterans Day week as a way to honor POW's and MIA's. The North Carolina Veterans Park displays the Missing Man Table in their lobby year round. WATCH
