When our police officers are sworn into duty, they each take an oath to protect and serve the people in our city. They are often faced with dangerous situations. Our officers have to rely on each and everyone of us to serve our communities. One way our officers strengthen their relationship with the community is by participating in National Faith and Blue Weekend. A Badge Blessing Ceremony was hosted today by the Fayetteville Police Department and Lewis Chapel. This special ceremony brought together law enforcement officers and members of our faith-based community in a unified prayer for the protection of our community and officers. As part of our ongoing participation in National Faith & Blue Weekend, True Vine Ministries and our Police Department will also host a free movie night tonight featuring "Inside Out 2.” A great way to get to know our officers and start the weekend.
We’re excited about the Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) for Fayetteville and the opportunity for residents to provide their feedback. Engaging the community through public input and education is also a key component of the SAP, ensuring that sustainability initiatives reflect local needs and values. You will have two opportunities for feedback next week. The first workshop will be Tuesday, Oct. 15 at the Bill Crisp Senior Center. The other option will be Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Senior Center East. We hope to see you at one of the workshops! There is also an online survey that is available for residents to take.
The plan aims to address the city's environmental, social, and economic challenges in a proactive and strategic manner. We want it to focus on creating a balance between decarbonization practices, improving environmental health, fostering social equity, and ensuring economic vitality.
The plan will align Fayetteville's sustainability efforts with state and federal goals, making the city eligible for grants and financial incentives.
Finally, I want to take a moment to recognize the continued efforts of our City employees assisting in western North Carolina. We still have Fire, Police and EMS on the ground and are making plans for a Public Services team with equipment dedicated to debris removal in the affected areas of Hendersonville, NC.
Their willingness to step up in times of need exemplifies the spirit of service and resilience that makes Fayetteville so special. Let’s continue to support one another, not just during times of crisis but every day, and show appreciation for the dedication of our team members who make such a difference.
Best,
Douglas J. Hewett
