The Latest from Doug

I'm excited to bring your attention to two meaningful events that underscore our commitment to paying tribute to our local heroes and celebrating our vibrant heritage.

As we pass the somber anniversary of September 11 and approach Veteran’s Day, we stand united to remember and honor the brave men and women who faithfully served their country to the end. I want to bring attention to the 2023 Field of Honor, a poignant and moving tribute to our fallen patriots.

I’m proud that the City of Fayetteville is again a Bronze Sponsor for this event with five flags being displayed. Each flag comes with its own unique story and a display tag that identifies the flag honoree. By displaying these tribute flags, we pay our respects to those who served and sacrificed for our nation and show our unwavering support for their families.

If you aren't able to make it this weekend, they are proudly displayed on the Parade Field of the U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum until November 12.

In another exciting development, I'm pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibit, "African-Americans on the River," at the Fayetteville History Museum. This exhibit is a powerful tribute to Black History and highlights the significant role African Americans played in shaping the Cape Fear River into a vital travel and trade route for North Carolina.

From the earliest days of Fayetteville as a community, the Cape Fear River has been a way of life, albeit one marked by hard labor, dangers, risks, and potential rewards. This exhibit seeks to shed light on this remarkable history and the contributions of African Americans to our local heritage. The exhibit will become a semi-permanent feature in the museum, a testament to our commitment to preserving and sharing the diverse history of our city.

Finally, I'd like to draw your attention to the City Market at the Museum, a year-round open-air market that celebrates the talents of our local artisans and the abundance of our community. From blended teas to handmade pottery, from soy candles to handblown glass, you'll find an array of unique offerings to explore.

This vibrant market reflects our city's creative spirit and a wonderful opportunity to support local businesses and artisans. I encourage you to visit the City Market at the Museum which is every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. It's a chance to connect with our community, discover local treasures, and savor the best Fayetteville has to offer.

I hope everyone enjoys these events and the many more our beautiful City has to offer this weekend.

Best regards,

Doug

5th Annual Fayetteville 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

The Fayetteville Fire Department and the Fayetteville Woodpeckers partnered to honor and remember at the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb held at Segra Stadium each year. Let us remember the heroic first responders who rushed into danger without hesitation, risking their lives to save others. Their bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Let us remember the countless families who were forever changed by this tragedy, and the pain and grief that still lingers in their hearts. But let us also remember the resilience of the people, who came together in the face of adversity, showing strength, unity, and compassion.

As we reflect on the events of 9/11, let us honor the memory of those we lost by continuing to stand together, promote peace, and work towards a more just and peaceful world. Fayetteville will never forget. VIEW VIDEO
