I want to take a moment to reflect on several important topics that impact our community. First, pedestrian safety has been a concern for both residents and City Leadership in Fayetteville. As we continue to strive towards making Fayetteville a more walkable city, remember that safety starts with each of us being alert, following traffic signals, and driving cautiously in pedestrian areas. With the most recent incidents highlighting the need for vigilance, I want to stress it is crucial that both pedestrians and motorists do their part to ensure safety for everyone.
I want to recognize the importance of the Field of Honor, hosted by the Airborne and Special Operations Museum Foundation in partnership with Cool Spring Downtown District. Starting Sept. 9, this inspiring display will honor the brave individuals who serve and have served in our nation’s military. The sight of hundreds of flags flying on the Parade Field at the Museum is a moving tribute to the strength, unity, and sacrifice of so many. Flags are still available for purchase, and this is a great way to pay tribute to a hero in your life.
On Sept. 19, the Fayetteville-Cumberland Human Relations Department, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice Community Relations Service and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina will host a Bias Incident and Hate Crimes Forum. I would like to invite you to this free event that will bring together local and federal law enforcement, district attorneys, civil rights organizations, and community groups to discuss strategies for addressing and preventing bias incidents and hate crimes. This forum will be held at FTCC. For those who would like to attend in-person, please register by Sept. 13. If you cannot make it in person, there is a virtual option available. Please join us and be part of this important conversation.
This weekend is the last chance to catch the Woodpeckers at Segra Stadium in 2024! —There will be doubleheader baseball and fireworks on Friday, Hockey Night on Saturday with a special jersey giveaway, and a fan appreciation day on Sunday—this is the perfect way to close out the season. Let’s come together to cheer for our hometown team one last time!
Stay safe, stay engaged, and thank you for your continued dedication to making our community the best place to live, work and recreate.
Best,
Douglas J. Hewett
