PROJECT UPDATES

Public Works Department

Force Main Replacement Project. The contractor Four Star Excavating has begun working on the section for Lift Station #2 along Highland Shores Blvd.

2024 Asphalt Overlay and Pilot Knoll Park RV Circle Overlay. A preconstruction meeting was held this week with the contractor, Jagoe Public Company. The project includes the overlay of Remington Terrace, Village Tree Drive, Orchid Hill Lane, and the RV Loop inside Pilot Knoll Park. Notice to Proceed will be issued on January 6, 2025.

Oak Street Ground Storage Tank Painting. O&A Classic Coating & Painting Corp. has almost completed the work on this project. The tanks are being disinfected so they can be returned to service.

Forested Area Near Walmart Pond. The City identified the heavily wooded area along the east side of FM2499 in the 3,000 block as part of the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) program. Applying CPTED principles aims to prevent crime by designing a physical environment that positively influences human behavior. The theory has five principles: natural access control, surveillance, territoriality, activity support, and maintenance. The City is following the 2 – 6 rule for CPTED in this area, which includes trimming dense shrubs at 2ft. or less and trimming the tree canopies at 6ft. or higher to reduce hiding places and increase lighting and overall visibility for law enforcement. City staff brought this forward during the budget process as a two-year project. It was approved and funded to trim the northern half of the wooded area in FY2025 and the southern half in FY2026. In the first week of December, the contractor used a forestry mulcher to clear the bulk of the small brush and vines. The following week, a crew removed any remaining 4-inch and smaller brush by hand and pruned the larger diameter trees to a 10-foot browse line. A layer of mulch will remain on the ground for a year or two before the area’s ground cover naturally re-establishes itself for City forces to maintain quarterly.
