Monroe Street Pool construction update
The Monroe Street Pool may be closed temporarily, but there is lot of action happening on site. I’m talking about the city’s 18-month construction project to renovate and replace the pool, locker rooms and other amenities, with completion expected in mid-2026.
Construction is now well underway, and this video gives you a glimpse of the progress made so far since work started a few months ago.
| | |
Here’s a quick snapshot of what’s been happening so far. Crews have:
- Installed fencing and other safety measures for construction
- Demolished the old pool and surrounding deck, equipment building and interior of administration building
- Removed existing solar equipment and shed buildings
- Began working on site grading and underground plumbing
Once complete, the improvements will include:
- A larger pool with 50% more lanes
- Expanded pool deck with outdoor lockers and showers
- Renovated locker rooms
- Family restrooms
- More shade and bleachers
- More parking spaces
- Addition of an outdoor entrance (instead of going through the lobby and locker rooms to get to the pool)
- New 8-foot wall with metal gates along Monroe Street to reduce sound for neighbors
- New and expanded solar
We appreciate everyone’s patience as we make these improvements and we’ll continue to share updates as construction progresses.

Trail safety tips and how to avoid rattlesnakes
With schools getting out for the summer and more people spending time outdoors, it’s a good time to review a few trail safety tips. Whether you're out for a quick walk or a longer hike, knowing how to stay safe — including what to do if you encounter a rattlesnake — can help keep you, your family and your pets safe.
General tips
- Never hike alone and always let someone know where you’re going.
- Stay alert to your surroundings. Don’t wear headphones.
- Stick to well-used trails.
- Take a fully charged cell phone with you.
- Wear closed-toe shoes and stay hydrated.
Rattlesnakes
Most rattlesnake bites occur between April and October, when snakes and humans are most active outdoors, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Snakes aren’t just found in undeveloped areas. They may show up in parks, golf courses and backyards, especially those near open spaces. If you need help safely removing a rattlesnake from a home, yard, park or playground, call the San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement at 619-299-7012 and press 1 for Dispatch.
Avoiding rattlesnakes
- Don’t leave trash or wood piles around your home where snakes might hide.
- Wear sturdy boots or shoes while working, hiking or playing outdoors.
- Keep your dog on a leash under six feet long and don’t let them stray from the trail.
- Make sure you can always see the path ahead of you and look for snakes that might blend into the ground.
- Avoid picking up rocks or sticks.
- If you encounter a rattlesnake on a trail, calmly back away and leave it alone.
What to do if you get bitten
Rattlesnakes typically avoid people and pets, but a snake will bite if it feels threatened. If your dog is bitten, get to a veterinarian immediately. If you’re bitten by a rattlesnake:
- Call 9-1-1 and seek medical help immediately. Stay calm, but act quickly.
- Remove any items like watches, rings and shoes that might constrict swelling.
- Do NOT apply a tourniquet.
- Do NOT pack the bite area in ice.
- Do NOT cut the wound with a knife or razor.
- Do NOT use your mouth to suck out the venom.

City construction map can help you avoid delays
Speaking of construction work along our roadways, don’t forget to check the city’s construction map to see where city projects are happening that might impact your commute. The map is updated weekly to help you avoid or minimize traffic delays and detours that often come with construction.
Remember, the map only shows city projects. It doesn’t include construction projects by local utilities, private companies or other agencies.
