Monroe Street Pool now open

The newly renovated Monroe Street Pool is now open! We caught up with some of the first swimmers who were there bright and early at 6 a.m. on Tuesday to take their first dip in the new larger pool. Watch the video to hear from them.

If you’re ready to plan your first swim, here’s a look at when you can join us:

  • Weekdays: 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Weekends: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • The pool will be closed for a regular maintenance hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Monroe Street Pool is currently available for lap and recreational swimming. In the coming months, we’ll begin offering a variety of aquatic programs, including swim lessons and aquatic team activities.

You can check the pool use calendars on the website to see when aquatics programming is scheduled.

Details on the upgraded pool amenities and how to renew or sign up for a pool pass can be found on our website.

Thanks again for your patience while we worked to complete these improvements. It’s projects like these that really bring our community together, and I hope more of you will come see for yourself all the new facility has to offer.

How to find Carlsbad election results

The San Diego County Registrar of Voters is responsible for releasing election results for Carlsbad’s races (and all races in our region). If you go to the website, you can filter the results to see just Carlsbad results (or any other races you’re interested in).

All results are unofficial until certified, and certification is expected to take place on or before Dec. 3. You can see at the top of the website the date the results were posted and how many ballots are left to count.

The city will hold a swearing in ceremony for the Mayor and the City Council Members representing districts 1 and 3 and the City Treasurer and City Clerk at the beginning of the Dec. 8 City Council meeting, which starts at 5 p.m. See district map.

New turf coming soon to Aviara Community Park

Starting, Monday, Nov. 9, the city will begin the second phase of replacing athletic fields, temporarily closing the field at Aviara Community Park. The turf at the Aviara Community Park athletic field was originally installed with the park's construction in 2005, and that turf was replaced in 2016.

The existing turf field will be removed and replaced with new synthetic turf, similar to the work performed at Poinsettia Community Park earlier this year.

  • The turf replacement project will improve field playing conditions and extend the life of this heavily used athletic field.
  • Construction at Aviara Community Park is expected to take about two months, weather permitting, with work scheduled during the winter to help reduce conflicts with peak field use.

During construction, visitors can expect the following:

  • The athletic field will be closed to all use from Nov. 9 through mid-January.
  • The field will not be available for sports, practices or informal use during construction.
  • Parking spaces in the front row closest to the field will be closed during construction for equipment and material staging.

Construction hours will be:

  • Monday through Friday, except city holidays
  • 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Rain or other weather conditions may result in temporary delays, and we’ll share updates if the schedule changes.

The field will be replaced with new synthetic turf designed to reduce health and environmental concerns raised about certain synthetic turf products. It will not use crumb rubber pellets as infill between the turf blades and is made without added PFAs, a type of “forever chemical” often used in manufacturing.

Changes to utility billing coming January 2027 for some customers

If you’re a Carlsbad Municipal Water District customer and/or receive wastewater services from the City of Carlsbad, please be aware of some upcoming changes to our Utility Billing Portal. Starting in early January 2027, we’re launching a new modernized and enhanced customer portal to make paying your bill easier.

You can view the water district map and sewer district Map to determine your service provider(s) and if this will impact you.

You don’t need to do anything just yet, but if you’d like to learn more, visit our website and sign up to get reminders of the changes delivered to your inbox.

Registration opens next week for winter classes and programs

Looking for something new to try this winter? The City of Carlsbad’s Winter Community Services Guide is now online, with classes, camps and programs for all ages. Browse options ranging from art and coding camps to sewing, karate and adult sports to find something that interests you.

Thank you to our Veterans

With Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11, I want to take a moment to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who have served in our military. On behalf of the city, thank you for the sacrifices you and your families have made.

Before I get to the city service hours on Veterans Day, I thought I’d give you a heads up about an event to honor veterans at the Carlsbad City Library on Tuesday, Nov. 10, the day before the holiday.

Honoring Veterans with USS Midway history

The Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane will host a special presentation about the dramatic mission of the USS Midway. During the final days of the Vietnam War in April 1975, the Midway rescued approximately 3,000 refugees from Saigon, Vietnam.

Midway Museum docent and Carlsbad resident John Landry, a Navy veteran, will share the story of the historic rescue mission. Doors open 30 minutes before the program begins. Seating is first-come, first-served.

No coastal rail service this weekend

The North County Transit District has announced there will be no rail service this Saturday and Sunday between the Oceanside Transit Center and Santa Fe Depot in San Diego due to routine maintenance and rail infrastructure work.

Also, beginning 10:30 p.m. Friday and lasting until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Caltrans and SANDAG will be working around the clock on the Batiquitos Lagoon Double Track project. Work will include moving the existing rail alignment from the wooden trestle bridge onto the newly constructed concrete double‑track bridge.

You can expect construction noise from equipment and vehicles and additional lighting.

Work will conclude in time for the Monday morning Coaster service.

From City Hall to Main Street

Earlier today, I had the honor of speaking at the California Main Street Conference, taking place right here in Carlsbad Village. This conference is an annual statewide gathering for organizations and people who work to strengthen and revitalize downtowns, business and commercial districts throughout California, like the Carlsbad Village Association does here.

I’m so glad the California Main Street Association chose to hold their annual conference in the Village.

I shared with them the importance of the working relationship between the business community and local government. To me, that means maintaining open communication, understanding challenges and working collaboratively to find solutions.

Take care and have an excellent weekend.
