August 16, 2019
Hello!

Next Thursday, August 22nd, the Napa Valley Unified School District Board of Education will hold their meeting in American Canyon. The meeting will start at 7 PM in the American Canyon High School Theater ( the agenda is available here).

Last May, District representatives shared with American Canyon families that tough decisions lay ahead. Since that time, the District has taken steps to address the situation, including the appointment of a special citizens committee to evaluate the closure and/or consolidation of small elementary schools in Napa and Yountville. The District has also taken a comprehensive look at American Canyon’s student enrollment trends verified from the California Department of Education’s data and refined American Canyon’s future enrollment projections. This week, City and District staff met to discuss their findings.

District staff will present these findings with a focus on enrollment data and demographic projections specific to American Canyon at the meeting on the 22nd. This information will help inform the District's decision whether or not to build a second middle school in American Canyon. Last week your Mayor, City Council members, and I traveled to Napa to attend the NVUSD Board meeting and spoke on behalf of the community’s needs for a second middle school. We asked the Board to hold their next meeting here in American Canyon so that our residents could more easily be informed on this important issue. I am grateful the District agreed to this request, and I strongly encourage all American Canyon residents to attend (regardless of whether you have school-aged children or not).
