OCEANSIDE PARK / RECREATION
FACILITIES RENAMED
The Oceanside City Council employs a Policy that defines the process, timeline, and manner in which Parks & Recreation facilities can be named or renamed. Adopted in May 2003, the policy describes the criteria for naming or renaming.

At its meeting on October 20, 2021, the City Council discussed applications received to rename Rancho Del Oro Park, the El Corazon Aquatic Center, and the Alex Road Skatepark. The Council took the following renaming actions:
Jim Wood Park at
Rancho Del Oro

Many know former Mayor Jim Wood, an Oceanside resident for over 65 years, who served as a member of the Oceanside Police Department for more than 31 years, and was elected to the City Council in 2002.

In 2004, Jim Wood was elected Mayor for multiple terms, serving as Oceanside's Mayor until January 1, 2018.
The William A. Wagner Aquatic Center

William Wagner was an educator and coach in Oceanside for over 30 years, teaching many in our community how to swim. He began the Oceanside High School Swim Team and guided them to multiple league and state championships. Bill was honored as the San Diego Swim Coach of the Year and inducted into the San Diego Hall of Champions.
Prince Memorial
Skate Park

Michael "Prince" Johnson, was considered by many as one of the most accomplished skateboarders from Oceanside, and was viewed as a friend and role model to younger skaters.

Alex Road Skate Park has been commonly referred to as "Prince Park" for years by the skateboarding community.
Each of the renaming applications submitted for consideration by the City Council have made significant contributions to specific areas of the Oceanside community. Signage will be designed and installed in the coming months.
