Draft Housing Element for Public Review
|
The State requires that cities update the Housing Element of the General Plan every eight years. The primary function of the Housing Element is to identify the housing needs of all residents and provide goals and strategies for developing and preserving an adequate supply of housing for all income levels. It places an emphasis on providing affordable housing opportunities for lower income households and special-needs groups. Oceanside’s Draft Housing Element (2021-2029) is now available for review and comment. You are encouraged to provide comments no later than May 7, 2021. INFO

Harbor Dredging / Beach Sand Update
|
The US Army Corps of Engineers is conducting its annual Harbor dredge. Sand removed from the Harbor inlet is deposited on City beaches. The work is expected to be complete in late May. Please use caution at the beach while this project is underway. Additionally, the Public Works Department initiated a feasibility study to develop a strategy to protect City beaches from the impacts of long-term shoreline erosion. The study considers options for beach sand replenishment and/or retention devices to stabilize and enhance beach widths in Oceanside. Save the date: A public workshop will be held Wednesday, May 26 at 6:00 p.m. on sand retention options.

Major Harbor Dock Replacement
|
Part of the varied maintenance of the Harbor is dock replacement when they reach the end of their expected life cycle. The Harbor's oldest dock, "J Dock," near the Marina Suites, is currently being replaced after 38 years of use. 2/3 of the new dock is now in place, and completion is expected by the end of the month. The new dock features a modern, low-maintenance system with an ADA-accessible gangway and upgrades to the fire suppression and electrical systems. Other recent Harbor improvements include renovated restrooms, dock storage lockers, a new walkway near the commercial docks, and ADA improvements to the tunnel, including lighting and crosswalks.

The annual celebration in honor of Oceanside's July 3 birthday and Independence Day will take place this year with modifications. Fireworks will begin at 9:00 p.m. on July 3 at El Corazon. Residents are encouraged to enjoy the show from home, but limited capacity viewing areas will be available near El Corazon to spread out. Rancho Del Oro will be closed from Oceanside Boulevard to Mesa, and Ocean Ranch will be closed from Corporate Center to Rancho Del Oro beginning at 5:00 p.m. that evening. There will be no food trucks or musical entertainment this year, but the fireworks display will be stellar. As a reminder, the personal use of fireworks is illegal in Oceanside.

Street Sweeping Parking Enforcement to Resume June 21
|
The City will resume enforcement for street sweeping parking violations beginning June 21, 2021. Street sweeping parking enforcement was paused over a year ago to accommodate residents due to the pandemic. Now that 'Stay- at-Home' Orders are lifted, enforcement will resume on designated street sweeping maintenance days to ensure gutters can be cleaned, and reduce pollution entering storm drains. Please refer to the street signs on your block for the days and times of parking restrictions, and move your vehicles accordingly. We’ll leave flyers on unmoved vehicles as a courtesy during late May and early June, so please don’t mistake these notices for parking tickets. To avoid a ticket on future street sweeping days, make sure to move your car according to posted restrictions, beginning June 21, 2021.

Results: Harvest Oceanside
|
Thank you to all who donated excess backyard produce at the annual Harvest Oceanside event at El Corazon on April 17. Over 2,200 pounds of surplus fresh produce, equivalent to 6,600 servings, were recovered from Oceanside yards. The produce is used to feed those in need in our community and helps keep food from being wasted in the landfill. If you were unable to stop by the event, you can still assist by requesting that volunteers come to your yard to pick excess produce. Simply contact ProduceGood.org to schedule.

Mayor Sanchez joined government leaders across the country to take action to help save the monarch butterfly, an iconic species whose populations have declined by over 90% in recent years. We can all make a difference at home and in our community by planting monarch gardens that include native milkweeds and nectar-producing plants. Monarchs lay their eggs on milkweed, their only caterpillar host plant. Learn more about these beautiful pollinators: Monarchs
