Beachfront Improvements - Phase I Update
|
Work continues on the Beachfront Improvements, Phase I project, located directly south of the Pier and adjacent to the Amphitheater. This project is largely funded by a grant award of nearly $8 million from the State of California, along with Measure X revenue. The overlook, new wider stairway, and plaza area opened for use in May and provides ample room to take in the panoramic ocean views as well as easy access to the beach. New seating areas are located throughout the overlook and plaza. Work on 14 new restrooms and beach maintenance building continues; the walls and wooden beam roofing system were recently constructed.
Although not the most highly visible component, a new sewer lift station is a critical part of the project. Once the new sewer lift station is operational, work can continue on the new Police Department Substation (a remodel of the historic bathhouse).
The Beachfront Improvements Project, Phase I, was originally anticipated to be completed in Fall 2021, however additional work required to construct and test the new sewer lift station, along with construction material delays, have extended the timeline. The Phase I Improvements are now expected to be complete in late winter.
