Folsom Police Department Offers Vacation Home Checks
|
As a free service to residents, Folsom Police Department volunteers will check your home while you are away on vacation. The service deters would-be robbers during the busy travel season and provides residents extra protection and peace of mind. As often as once a day, a volunteer will walk the perimeter of the home, check doors and windows to make sure they are locked, and remove any papers or packages that are a tell-tale sign that the resident is not home. When you submit a vacation check application, it also provides the Folsom Police Department with your contact information, should the need arise. Vacation check applications are available at www.folsom.ca.us/police or at the Folsom Police Department, 46 Natoma Street.

Folsom Park and Facility Naming Questionnaire: Deadline to Respond is May 21
|
The Folsom Parks and Recreation Commission is seeking public input regarding the current and possible future guidelines for naming the city’s parks and facilities. The city’s current park naming policy states that park sites under two acres in size will be named after adjacent streets or the subdivision in which they are located. All park sites exceeding two acres in size will be named after an individual or family who has made a significant contribution to the city, or after an important landmark or historical aspect of the area.
The Parks and Recreation Commission reviewed the park naming policy guidelines established by Resolution No. 5177. The commission is now seeking public input about the naming guidelines; interested community members are invited to complete a brief online questionnaire or provide comments and ideas by email. The deadline to respond is Friday, May 21.
Information gathered will be compiled by the Parks and Recreation Commission and reported back to the Folsom City Council to assist them in making their final decision as to the future guidelines for naming the city’s parks and facilities.

Wildfire Preparedness Starts at Home
|
May is Wildfire Awareness Month, and the Folsom Fire Department encourages residents to reduce the threat of wildfires in the community. It is often embers and small flames that cause homes to ignite during wildfires. Residents can make their own property—and their neighborhood—safer with these tips:
- Clear leaves and other debris from gutters, eaves, porches, and decks.
- Remove dead vegetation and other items from under your deck or porch.
- Replace or repair shingles on your roof and enclose under-eave and soffit vents or screens with metal mesh to prevent ember entry.
- Cover exterior attic vents with metal wire mesh no larger than 1/8 inch to prevent sparks from entering the home.
- Remove flammable materials (dead vegetation, firewood stacks, propane tanks) within 30 feet of your home’s foundation and outbuildings, up to your property line, including garages and sheds.
- Don’t let debris and lawn cuttings linger.
- Develop an emergency evacuation plan and practice it with everyone in your home.
- Prune trees so the lowest branches are 6 to 10 feet from the ground. Tree canopies should not touch the house.

Water-Wise Tip of the Week
|
How long should you run your sprinklers? The answer: just long enough; never run your sprinklers past the point of runoff. Once water runs off, the soil is saturated—any water applied after this point is just wasted. If your lawn needs more water, use the “cycle and soak” method. Instead of one long watering session, schedule your irrigation in multiple shorter sessions, allowing an hour between start times. This will result in less runoff and allow for deeper infiltration of the water for deeper root growth. Lawns with deeper roots are more drought-resistant and will fare much better with less water.

The city makes every effort to safeguard its water supply and once again reports Folsom’s system meets and exceeds state and federal water quality standards.
