TRAFFIC SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS ON FOLSOM LAKE CROSSING AND EAST NATOMA STREET SET TO BEGIN

A traffic safety improvement project at Folsom Lake Crossing and East Natoma Street is set to begin in the spring. The project is designed to improve safety, reduce accidents and fatalities, and increase mobility.

The project will include 2,150 feet of metal beam median barriers, radar speed feedback signs, and updated pavement markers and signage. Median barrier rails will be installed on Folsom Lake Crossing, between the Johnny Cash Bridge and Folsom Spillway Access Road, and on East Natoma Street, between Gionata Way to the Folsom Lake Crossing intersection. The city also plans to resurface the same portion of East Natoma Street and Folsom Lake Crossing with a "friction course" overlay—a pavement treatment that improves surface drainage and tire traction.

These locations were identified in the city's 2021 Local Road Safety Plan (LRSP)—a data-driven analysis of major traffic collisions, which identifies the appropriate corrective measures to reduce traffic accident fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads. The LRSP is updated on a regular basis to evaluate recent collisions and is required to apply for and obtain State of California traffic safety improvement funding. Design plans will be completed in February, and construction will begin in May. A U.S. Department of Transportation Highway Safety Improvement Program grant funds the Folsom Lake Crossing and East Natoma Street Barrier Rail Project.

Folsom Parks & Recreation’s Fun Factory Preschool and Kindergarten Readiness programs are accepting registrations for the 2023-24 school year. Your child must be age 3 or 4 by September 30 to enroll. Spots are filling quickly in many of the classrooms, so early registration is encouraged. Find more information about the preschool programs, the online registration process, and answers to frequently asked questions at www.folsom.ca.us/preschool. SMART CYCLING CLASS

Join Gina Silvernale, an instructor with the League of American Bicyclists, for this two-session class for ages 18+. Training will consist of three hours of classroom learning, teaching cyclists how to coexist with traffic. The six-hour on-bike session includes a ride to practice newly learned skills and the rules of the road. This class is for those who already know how to ride a bike; it is not a “learn to ride” class, and not for E-bikes. The classroom session will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 2, and the on-bike session from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 4. The registration fee is $75 for Folsom residents; learn more and register online. Call 916-461-6601 with questions.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: ASSIST FOLSOM’S FIRST RESPONDERS

The Folsom Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteer program plays a key role in the City of Folsom’s goal to protect and advance community safety. Folsom CERT volunteers work closely with the Folsom Fire Department and are trained in basic first aid, light search and rescue, and small fire suppression. When large-scale incidents occur, CERT volunteers provide neighbor-helping-neighbor assistance before the arrival of firefighters, police, or other first responders. They also play an important role in community safety and emergency preparedness and outreach. The Folsom Fire Department is recruiting applicants for the CERT training class starting March 7. Those who complete the required five-week training course and pass a background check are eligible to volunteer with the CERT team. The training course is free; participants must be age 18 or older, and preference is given to applicants who live or work in Folsom. To register or for more information, contact the CERT leadership team at [email protected].

SCOTT ROAD EXTENSION COMPLETED

The Scott Road Extension Project is now complete, improving travel between Highway 50 and the community of Rancho Murieta. The project connects Scott Road to the Prairie City Road/White Rock Road intersection and adds a new roundabout at the Prairie City State Vehicular Recreation Area (Gate 4). The project also includes a new traffic signal and improved intersections.

The new Scott Road connects to the new Folsom segment of the Capital SouthEast Connector—a planned 34-mile expressway that will connect Interstate 5 in Elk Grove to Highway 50 in El Dorado County. White Rock Road from Prairie City Road to East Bidwell Street was recently reconstructed into a safer, higher-capacity four-lane expressway now open to motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
