Notice of Public Hearings

The City of Columbia will hold a public hearing to offer citizens the opportunity to provide public comment and input into the plan for spending $18.5 Million of CDBG-MIT funding allocated by Federal Register notice 84 FR 45838 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on Aug. 30, 2019.

CDBG-MIT funds represent an opportunity for the City to use this assistance in areas impacted by the 2015 floods to carry out strategic and high-impact projects that will mitigate disaster risks and reduce future losses. While it is impossible to eliminate all risks, CDBG-MIT funds will help the community mitigate against future disaster risks and coordinate State and local planning activities.

The hearings will:
·          Explain what mitigation is and how CDBG-MIT funding may be used
·          Offer information focused on proposed mitigation projects.
·          Allow members of the public to provide comments and ask questions

The public will have access to the hearing facility at 6:00pm. The meeting will begin with a presentation from City officials, followed by acceptance of public comments. Written public comments may also be submitted by email to or by mail to Community Development, 1401 Main Street, 4 th floor, Columbia, SC 29201. Written comments should be labeled as Columbia_CDBG-MIT.

Riverfront Park Closing Due to Maintenance 

The City of Columbia’s Parks and Recreation Department announced Riverfront Park will be closed on weekdays beginning Tuesday, February 25 th for two weeks. This affects both Riverfront North and Riverfront South at 4122 River Drive and 312 Laurel Street. The park will be open on weekends and evenings, beginning at 5:30pm.

Dominion Power will be removing stumps from the canal levy, and repairing all areas where trees have been excavated. This work is necessary to maintain dam safety. Trucks and heavy equipment will be travelling along the canal levy during this project. There will be no access to the canal trail or the lower trail during weekdays. The Broad River Bridge ramp into the park will also be closed to bike and pedestrian traffic.

Park users can still visit the fitness center and restrooms. The steps to the Esplanade and the entire Esplanade will remain open during this project.

Trails will reopen at 5:30 pm for evening visitors until closing at 9:00 pm. During closure, we suggest that you explore Granby Park at 100 Catawba Street.
