MAY 2022 ALHAMBRA ANNOUNCEMENTS
Experience Five Miles Of Car-Free Streets With
626 Golden Streets on May 1st
On Sunday, May 1, 2022 the San Gabriel Valley’s largest ciclovia or “open streets” event will return to the Cities of Alhambra, San Gabriel, and South Pasadena. Attendees will have an opportunity to walk, bike, run, skate, scoot, dance, and play across five miles of car-free streets. 
Like cicLAvia in Los Angeles, 626 Golden Streets is a FREE, family-friendly “ciclovia” that temporarily opens streets for people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy in a healthy, fun, and novel fashion.
The event is free to the general public. Attendees can start and stop at any point along the route, at any time from 9am to 4pm. Activity zones in each participating community will host live music, cultural performances, family-friendly games and activities, kids play zones, vendors, zero-emission demo zones, and more! Participants are encouraged to enjoy the day by foot, bike, skate, skateboard, scooter, or any other type of human-powered vehicle! The City of Alhambra's Eco Fair booth will be part of the event, along with more than a dozen other vendors. The Alhambra Farmers Market will take place in conjunction with the event.
Please view the route below. Route closures will be in full effect by 6AM. Some sections of the route will be open at 4pm, most of the route should be re-opened to vehicle traffic between 5pm and 6pm.
Bike Smart Workshops with
Alhambra Civic Center Library
The Alhambra Civic Center Library is partnering with several organizations to hold bike repair workshops for beginners and advanced riders. Bringing your own bicycle is recommended, but optional. In these hands-on sessions for all ages, you will learn how to:
-fix a flat tire
-grease a bike chain
-adjust seat height
-check brakes
-properly wear bike safety gear

Bike Maintenance and Repair for Advanced Riders
-Saturday, April 30, 10am - 1pm, Emery Park, 2709 Mimosa Street.
-Saturday, May 14, 10am - 1pm, Alhambra Park, 500 N. Palm Avenue (near the playground). The Alhambra Police Department will hand out helmets for kids at this event (limited supplies, child must be present).
From late May to June, ActiveSGV and the Alhambra Police Department will teach you how to bike safely on city streets. Bringing your own bicycle is recommended for these three events:
Bike Safety for Beginners
Saturday, May 21, 10:30am - 12pm, Alhambra Library, 101 S. First Street.
Do you want to make bicycling part of your daily travel routine, but you’re not sure where to start? This will be a 1 1/2 hour in person class that will help you improve your bicycling skills and how to ride on city streets safely. You will also learn an overview of the rules of the road, how to plan your route, and tips and tricks to make bicycling for everyday travel safe and convenient. The Alhambra Police Department will also hand out helmets for kids (limited supplies, child must be present).
Bike Safety for Experienced Riders
Saturday, May 28, 10:30am - 12:30pm, Almansor Park, 800 S. Almansor Street (near basketball courts).
This will be a 2-hour Rules of the Road class that will help you learn how to bike on the city streets safely. We will teach you the rules of the road and we will also practice on bike skills to make you a better rider. The Alhambra Police Department will also hand out helmets for kids (limited supplies, child must be present).
Bike Safety for Street Riding
Saturday, June 4, 10:30am - 1pm, Alhambra Park, 500 North Palm Avenue.
Do you want to be more comfortable and confident when cycling on city roads? This Streets Skills Class is a free 2 ½ hour class for adults and teens to practice safe riding with a group of beginning cyclists. You’ll learn cycling etiquette, practice riding in a real-world setting, and make pit stops to review best practices while riding.

City of Alhambra Extends Deadline For Small Business Assistance Grant (SBAG) Program

The City of Alhambra is extending the deadline for businesses to apply for the COVID-19 Small Business Assistance Grant (SBAG) Program. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, until funding for the program is completed. Businesses are encouraged to apply now due to limited funding. 
Approximately $150,000 in grants funds are available for the program. Businesses with 25 employees or less (including the owners) are eligible for grant awards of $5,000 to offset costs incurred as a result of COVID-19. Businesses will be subject to eligibility requirements and if approved, grants can be used for the following types of expenses:
·                    Overhead expenses.
·                    Rent and utilities.
·                    Business services to increases capacity to carryout business activities including marketing and promotions.
·                    Payroll expenses including hiring bonuses (within limits).
·                    Business inventory and supplies including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
·                    Day-to-day expenses including maintenance, capital or equipment purchases for business operations

Leisure Class Registration Begins May 2nd
Registration for summer leisure classes begins on Monday, May 2, 2022. Visit our website to view the brochure and schedule of classes and activities.
The City of Alhambra's Residential Utility Assistance Grant Program provides financial assistance to low to moderate-income residents with an emphasis on those negatively impacted by COVID-19. This program offers a one-time grant of up to $500 to pay delinquent water bills on a first-come-first-served basis. Learn more.
