SNOW & ICE CONTROL IN ALTOONA

Altoona's Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining over 68 miles of roads within the City of Altoona. When it comes to snow plowing, roads within the City are prioritized and in the following order:

  1. Main roads and hills
  2. Side streets

Road plowing begins when there is 3” of snow on the streets. Road salting is applied during emergency conditions (e.g. freezing rain, sleet, or ice).

Blocked driveway? This is an unfortunate side effect of plowing the streets. Snow is plowed as near to the curbs as possible, and as a result, driveways can become blocked with wet, heavy snow. It’s the property owner’s responsibility to clear snow from the end of their driveway.

Sidewalks must be cleared of snow and ice within 24 hours following snowfall or icy weather.

Residents may pick up sand free of charge from the Public Works Department, 2000 Spooner Avenue, for use on sidewalks. You will need to bring your own container and shovel.
