Mayor Vanney Proclaims Child Abuse Prevention Month

Join us in Arlington as we stand together to protect the most vulnerable among us—our children. Let's take action to build a community where every child experiences loving care and a nurturing environment. Their future is our future.

Positive Childhood Experiences are critical in counteracting trauma and fostering the well-being of our young ones. Together, we can support safe, stable, and nurturing relationships. Childhood trauma affects not just the individual but can echo through generations. Breaking this cycle requires all of us. Families with access to social and economic support are less prone to instances of abuse and neglect. Our community thrives when we uplift every family. From families and prevention advocates to all forms of local government, unity in action creates meaningful change.

The City's domestic violence coordinators help guide families through the process and point people to resources that include DSHS. Take action, call hotlines on Snohomish County's website, and in an emergency, call 911.

Mayor Don Vanney reminds us of our collective responsibility in proclaiming April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Share stories, break down barriers, and help us build a supportive ecosystem for children's futures.

What can we do as a community:

  • Education & Awareness – Learn the signs of abuse, including physical, emotional, and neglect-related indicators. Understanding these warning signs can help detect problems early.

  • Open Communication – Encourage children to speak openly about their feelings and experiences. Let them know they can trust responsible adults if something feels wrong.

  • Safe Environments – Create secure spaces for children, whether at home, school, or in the community. Monitor who interacts with them and ensure they aren’t left alone with individuals who raise concerns.

  • Online Safety – Teach children to be cautious when using the internet. Discuss online predators, cyberbullying, and how to report inappropriate interactions.

  • Recognizing Grooming Behaviors – Be aware of individuals who seek to build excessive trust with children. Predators often use manipulation tactics to isolate and control their victims.

  • Reporting Concerns – If abuse is suspected, report it immediately to the police or child protective services. Early intervention can prevent further harm.

  • Community Support – Engage in local programs aimed at preventing abuse, such as parenting classes, mentorship opportunities, or child advocacy groups.

City Employee Procures Deceased Veteran's Headstone

In 2013, a veteran named Mr. Mayo passed away in Arlington. He had only one sibling, and an elderly brother. While the VA (Veterans Affairs) offers to provide headstones, the process is quite involved and requires a power of attorney to make the arrangements. Unfortunately, Mr. Mayo’s power of attorney was unresponsive to our Cemetery Coordinator Tawnya Post's attempts to secure a headstone, leaving her unable to proceed due to VA regulations.

However, in 2025, while handling another VA headstone request, Tawnya discovered updated VA forms that now allow a cemetery representative to authorize headstone orders. Tawnya then resubmitted the necessary paperwork for Mr. Mayo and secured the delivery of his headstone. Sadly, there are no family members to inform, as Mr. Mayo’s brother, Vernon, passed away in 2017 and is also interred in the same cemetery.

Tawnya's care and compassion in her job shines through to those who are grieving, and we appreciate her dedication.
