NEW ORGANICS RECYCLING REQUIREMENTS
STARTING JANUARY 1, 2022
Starting January 1, 2022, Azusa's trash collection and recycling services will change to comply with SB 1383 which requires ALL Californians to recycle organic waste. Acceptable organic waste includes green waste, 100% fiber-based food soiled paper, and food scraps. In the coming weeks, the City of Azusa and Athens Services, the City's franchised hauler, will be providing additional outreach and communication regarding the transition. Among the new changes include the following:

Single Family Residential:
  • Change from manual collection to automated collection
  • Athens Services will provide three 96-gallon containers (black for trash, blue for recycling, green for organic waste)
  • Free residential bulky waste pickup on trash day with 24-hour advanced notice
  • Free electronic waste drop-off and compost giveaway
  • Customer Service and billing will transition from City to Athens Services
  • Change from monthly billing to quarterly billing
  • First quarterly bill from Athens Services on March 1, 2022

Multi-Family with 5 Units or More:
  • Organic waste recycling and mixed waste collection
  • Free residential bulky waste pickup on trash day with 24 hour advanced notice
  • Customer Service and billing transition from City to Athens Services
  • First monthly billing from Athens Services on January 1, 2022

Commercial:
  • Organic waste recycling and mixed waste collection
  • Enhanced Outreach and Education to help businesses comply with the new recycling mandates
  • Edible Food Recovery Program for required businesses

Along with the changes in collection service, Athens will be providing additional cleaning services throughout the City. This includes regular power washing of the bus stops and shelters throughout the City, as well as power washing of the downtown district at no additional cost to the Azusa community.
THE AZUSA COMMUNITY WELCOMES DENNIS BECKWITH
TO FILL VACANT COUNCIL POSITION
At their public special meeting on October 13, 2021, the Azusa City Council conducted candidate interviews and appointed Dennis Beckwith as the City's newest Councilmember. Mr. Beckwith, who serves as the Director of Development for Gift and Estate Planning at Azusa Pacific University, fills the Council seat left vacant by the unexpected passing of former Councilmember Uriel E. Macias in August this year. Mr. Beckwith can hold the seat until the next general municipal election in 2022. Welcome, Councilmember Beckwith!

WINTER WATERING SCHEDULE NOVEMBER TO MARCH
Following the second driest year on record and with near record low storage in California’s largest reservoirs, Governor Gavin Newsom issued a proclamation extending the drought emergency statewide on October 19, 2021. As Californians face a potential third consecutive dry year, everyone is encouraged to do their part in conserving water. Azusa Light & Water continues to enforce its watering schedule and water use restrictions.
